If you can afford to go to Stanford you can afford to bribe people to get into Harvard. I don't understand what this lawsuit is about.

I'm loving this situation. Welcome to what white men have been dealing with since the invention of affirmative action for college. In an ideal world the only thing you would have to submit your grades. No names or personal information given to the people making approval or rejection. Just pure unbiased facts

The lawsuit is about the application fees these universities require, not whether or not they were accepted.  Its a sad day when subby doesn't even RTFA

Rightfully so, USC has said they're denying admission for any applicants involved in this.

For others already attending schools... it's going to get uncomfortable. As was pointed out, some of these kids were not aware of what their parents were doing and might be blameless. But others were willing participants and that's going to get interesting.

While I have personally mentioned on Fark, that I feel that these admission processes aren't fair (two poor people apply and one gets in because of their skin color/ethnicity), these two things are apples and oranges.

But since you mentioned it, and I've only seen the headline pictures of some of these related articles, I just wanted to ask, were any of those accused NOT rich, white folk?

I honestly feel bad for the kids of the accused, unless they knew about it, at which point sympathy goes out the window. I have no sympathy for the colleges or universities involved, however, and never will.

AFTA (as for the article), my first reaction reading the headline was "no, not students file lawsuit", "lawyers who saw an opportunity file lawsuit".
Then I read in the article that the two students had filed the lawsuit themselves, so, ok.
"Messages seeking comment from Olsen and Woods were not immediately returned. An email to one of their attorneys, John Medler, also was not immediately returned."
Ah, there you go.

As far as any of us can tell, their point was that white men have been horribly discriminated against ever since brown people and women decided they were actual human beings and not chattel. Which of course meant that these rich people had no choice but to buy their kids' way into uni.

In other words, they're almost as much of a moron as you are.

Hispanic as in "looks like a minority" or hispanic as in "white but has a Spanish last name?" Not even considering whiteys from Spain itself, many of the "hispanics" who attend elite schools tend to lean toward the "white in their home country" side of the spectrum, and even then only from one parent.

Standford is a fine university--provided your parents live in Pennsylvania.

But what about all the students who live in California? Where are they to go to escape their helicopter parents?

It's the day pupils who really suffer the unfairness of the university system, them and the townies, of course.

Pity them. They never get to wear university affliaited merchandise because other townies or their school chums might seem them in the university colours and mark them down as nerds, geeks, freaks or worst of all, criminology and hotel management students.

When supposedly academic powerhouses like Yale choose to give admissions priority to those who take part in expensive hobbies for the rich - crew, fencing and so on - they know precisely what they are doing.

It's just like the UK medical school which gives credit for playing rugby (mainly a private school sport) but not for playing soccer (mainly a state school sport). Rugby encourages leadership, apparently.

Don't worry, for the admission process, they will be colorblind to which type of Chicano you are. Gomez, Gallegos, Guzman, Gutierrez is all some kind of Spanish. Head shots aren't included in applications.

Besides do the gabachos care? When some of them see or hear a Spanish surname they bring out their standard trope questionnaire. I do appreciate when they ask if your family is from Spain. Almost as if they want to determine if you are worthy of their racism against prietos and indios. Divide and conquer, hell it worked with the Hutu and Tutsi that same strategy could work here. A la Brie Larsen, I feel the need to issue a caveat: I am making no claim to the number of Caucasian Americans who think this way, just expressing my annoyance with the, hopefully small, subset of those that do.

As for the story, I am glad, even if it is elites going to Stanford, that the schools are being sued. If these large institutions are going to blame a few "rogue, bad actors" and ignore their own complicity and complacency with regard to this scandal, they need to do some restructuring. What is happening at USA Gymnastics comes to mind.

Wow, your anecdotal cherry picking really showed me.  So, how do you know which students are actually 'Affirmative Action' students?  Or are you just guessing based on their skin color?  Because otherwise you just described 90% of all freshman and sophomores in college.  Hell, I went through grad school visiting the bar and the game room weekly, and only stepped foot in the library once.

For decades the Murican power structure justified its stranglehold on business and government by claiming 'those people; weren't 'ready/qualified'.  One of the excuses they used was educational 'attainment'.   For decades this meant having a degree from one of the Ivies.  The Ivies were, in reality, clubs for the sons of wealthy WASPs.  If you don't believe me, just ask George W. about it.

affirmative action is fundamentally stupid, it doesn't matter which sets of race it props up while pushing another down.

racism does not and will not ever cure racism.
Now, if we can just get the racists on evening television or on your twatter feed to understand and relay this to you, we can try to be a better group of people.

But no, go on and keep trying to attract flies with vinegar instead of honey. Im sure its going to work out eventually.
