Meh, that's completely expected for Portland.  "Random" at this point would be for them to tell him to go home, get a job, and then serve scotch instead.  No one would expect that.  Year one would be a flop but next year would sell out.

I swear, I need to take a vacation to Portland eventually and wear full Victorian/Edwardian-like Goth clothing and be biatched at by some Hipster that I am one of the "conformists" while seeing he has that same Joy Division shirt on. I could use a good laugh.

"Entry is free, but a $20 tasting package of a souvenir mug and 10 tokens is required to drink beer or cider. Patrons pay four tokens for a full mug of beer or cider, or one token for a taste. Additional tokens may be purchased for $1 apiece. Mugs and tokens are sold on-site and select locations two weeks before the festival. The festival is cash-only, with ATMs provided."

Didn't somebody get into trouble for running a restaurant out of their house using a similar formula?

You really think there are hipsters going around yelling at people that they're conformists?  Do you think it's 1968 here?

Your more likely to get ignored. I do that to the hipsters. Don't bother them, they won't bother you.

My annual gaming convention is in Portland. Four days in a hotel with it's own brewery, winery, and distillery. And they make decent stuff, too.

I've been to a couple of bars/clubs where that is almost mandatory dress. You wouldn't look out of place like that in Portland, honestly, you'd probably get props for your dedication to the aesthetic.

And I'm reminded that I still need to get tickets to the vampire masquerade ball in May, gotta message my friend for details, thanks for the round-about reminder. :)

This guy has been a portland fixture for quite awhile so the only surprising thing here is this didn't happen years ago.

/first saw him riding along the waterfront outside the micro brew fest 10 years ago
//was playing the Imperial March, blowing flames out of his bagpipes while wearing a Darth Vader mask and kilt
\\\not the weirdest thing I've seen downtown PDX

I think it's funny how often I run into Brian.

The strangest thing is he isn't the first bagpipe playing unicyclist that I've known here.

I really wish I was joking, but in 2008 I had a neighbor that managed to play a ukulele while riding up a hill leaving Forest Park on his unicycle while drunk and stoned.  He also knew accordion, bagpipes, and the fiddle.

Well I didn't say yelled at, just biatched at. Besides, if they don't tell you directly, the Hipster(s) just stare disapprovingly at you and others.

Dressed like that? They'd be impressed. You really should meet some hipsters in their natural environment. They're quite gentle creatures, and if you frighten them it's actually a beautiful sight to see a flock of them huddle into a Lyft and ride away into the sunset.

They're like geese that only figuratively shiat on everything.

Portland weirdness used to make me smile and now it makes me cringe.
there was a time when Portland was weird and it was random weirdness which was interesting and amusing (the 24 hour Elvis Museum, the Ititerod Santa race through strip clubs, etc). it has become hipsters with nasty case of the 'try too hards' that are just doing ironic pop culture mash-ups which is the opposite of weird now. it is something that triggers my vicarious feeling of embarrassment more often than not.

I do meet Hipsters in their natural habitat, I go to Asbury Park, NJ and some parts of Brooklyn to fulfill my pinball addiction (At Silverball Museum is especially hilarious and cringeworthy with them, they'll ask you what your favorite game(s) are in the museum and I'll say "Well, Whitewater is one of my favorites, well designed with variety in each game because the shots are random each time you play, has good flow and some fun humor." and you ask back and they say, "Well I like the older machines because they're so retro!", and when you try to get them into specifics about what about the gameplay or style of the older machines and they'll repeat their "retro" response!).

But it is just the fun boys and girls that some will look down upon your style, while wearing the same matching lumberjack outfit and beards or Betty Page hair bangs and polka dots. Yet others are apparently "accepting" of your outfits, then come around and dress like this with not ever themselves enjoying an actual Goth band like Siouxsie and the Banshees, Lords of the New Church and/or Christian Death:
img.fark.netView Full Size

/Not "Stop liking what I like", it's "If you like what I like, don't do it for "LOOK AT ME!" fashion or "I'M KNOWLEDGEABLE, SO PAY ATTENTION!", learn about it and enjoy it for yourself."
//Of course if I wear a Joy Division shirt, then they're instantly alright with me

This.  I don't even like Portland and I grew up and spent most of my life there.  But Ground Kontrol definitely makes being in Portland not suck.

Not as good as The Rockafire in KCK, but definitely worth it if you got to be in Portland.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this.  Tulsa might be low key weird, but when it does get weird, it's authentic weird.

I try to visit a lot because I have family there. I don't get a hipster vibe but I must not be fully aware. I was going to move there but just need more sun to make me happy. I am going out there this summer but only to visit. I am sure that Brooklyn is much more effected.
