cracks in the wall?
let's find out

2019-03-14 03:05:11 PM
12 was more than I expected.  May the cracks in the GOP get wider.

2019-03-14 03:05:18 PM
So we're just abandoning those with economic anxiety?

//  I'm okay with this.

2019-03-14 03:05:18 PM
Donnie Dipshiat is going to try for his first veto!

2019-03-14 03:05:19 PM
Good, but several more need to break ranks to override the veto

Whew! Checks and balances in my government? It more likely than you think!

2019-03-14 03:05:57 PM
I'm fine with this

2019-03-14 03:05:57 PM
Only a few more senators and they can override his veto! House might be a little harder, but still doable if they can secure enough Senators first!

2019-03-14 03:06:12 PM
The closer we get to election season, the bigger those gaps are going to get.  The country HATES Trump and the GOP he now owns.  They're just now at the beginning edge of figuring this out.

// They're not a smart party...just a loud one.

2019-03-14 03:06:13 PM
Just so they can pretend they tried when he vetoes it.  So obvious.

2019-03-14 03:06:15 PM
..Twelve?

Muhahahhahahahahhahahahahhahaha

So, it began!

2019-03-14 03:06:21 PM
I'm actually surprised by this.  Not sure I can recall the Repubs ever breaking rank in any meaningful way, well except McCain recently but he was already dead.

I fully expected this to get pushed through by veto.

2019-03-14 03:06:22 PM
Ben Sasse and Ted Cruz voted no. Real Constitutionalists, those guys.

2019-03-14 03:06:27 PM
The upcoming meltdown on Twitter from our toddler-in-chief is going to be unreal.

2019-03-14 03:06:31 PM
So... he'll veto it and it won't survive another round.

2019-03-14 03:06:58 PM
This is a test. If they break from Trump and don't suffer consequences from him or his cult, then he's effectively neutered.

2019-03-14 03:07:02 PM
People that say this will embarrass Trump should remember that this will only be like the 5th worst thing to happen to him this week.

2019-03-14 03:07:11 PM
The GOP can't even check the box that says "democracy" anymore. What a bunch of useless tools.

2019-03-14 03:07:17 PM

flypusher713: 12 was more than I expected.  May the cracks in the GOP get wider.

Maybe some of them have realized that backing such unilateral executive actions on such flimsy pretexts doesn't bode well for the country as a whole - or for working with (or against) the next president, which most likely will be someone other than Trump.

Five had said earlier that they were voting against it.  All about who controls the money.

2019-03-14 03:07:46 PM
I like how he can veto a check on his own power ...

2019-03-14 03:08:05 PM
Watching the Republican Party crack has to be the best thing this year. ...so far.

2019-03-14 03:08:35 PM

hoohoodilly: Good, but several more need to break ranks to override the veto

I was just thinking that. I almost wonder if they can get seven more added on just because of the pull-and-tug between the branches. Like folks who don't particularly dislike the wall issue, but wouldn't stand for the president doing something congress told him not to.

2019-03-14 03:08:38 PM

hoohoodilly: Good, but several more need to break ranks to override the veto

We will see how Republican voters react to those who voted against Trump.  If it's not overly negative, that could embolden more Republicans in both chambers to switch their votes on an override attempt.

A republican saying anything is worthless, you'll never know how they'll vote until they cat their vote.

physt: So... he'll veto it and it won't survive another round.

Wait and see.  These windsocks will be watching the polls to decide on the override vote.  Some day the time will come when the GOP decides Trump is a net loss for them.  They may be late by a couple of years, but they'll get there.

2019-03-14 03:09:51 PM

HawgWild: I like how he can veto a check on his own power ...

Congress still gets final say on a check on his own power, mind you. It's just that the GOP are just spineless enough to sacrifice the checks & balances between the legislative and executive branches in the long term if it means pushing their agenda forward in the short term.

2019-03-14 03:10:09 PM

hoohoodilly: Good, but several more need to break ranks to override the veto

And in the House, where you need (2/3 * 435 =) 290 votes to override a veto, 45 Republicans would have to cross the aisle.

Nobody should even so much as think about unzipping yet.

// House vote was 245-182, with all Dems on the winning side

2019-03-14 03:10:11 PM
Republicans do a non morally bankrupt thing, and it's not even an election year!!!!
/12 of them anyway

The words "checks and balances" are not in the US Constitution, just like how the words "separation of church and state" aren't in it.

And then it goes into the courts, where it will fail spectacularly, if it doesn't die of gangrene first.

And don't forget there will be another tax return season early 2020 to remind voters how badly Trump and the GOP farked them to satisfy their billionaire donors.

They want a republicancy instead. What a republicancy, you ask? It's the version of fascism where all the adherents speak English.

"I can tell you I have the support of the police, the support of the military, the support of the Bikers for Trump - I have the tough people, but they don't play it tough - until they go to a certain point, and then it would be very bad, very bad. "

I won't say this was futile.  First it helps the lawsuits against this bogus emergency.  But just as good, trumpy's got 12 new thorns in his hide.  Also some of the spineless suckers who voted "no" will catch some political heat.

2019-03-14 03:13:05 PM

I thought this was not something he could veto.

still not wide enough for a trumper to have a God-Emperor Glory Holetm

Chris Ween: etoof: Donnie Dipshiat is going to try for his first veto!

Even if that's true, do you really think he won't try?

2019-03-14 03:14:16 PM
Well that sucks. If 12 GOP senators voted for it, and it only won with 59 votes, that means that some Democrats voted against it.

2019-03-14 03:14:16 PM

HawgWild: I like how he can veto a check on his own power ...

Yeah, that was some twisty Supreme Court shiat from what I've read. If Congress can check executive power they'll violate separation of powers, so it kind of sounds like we've been a monarchy from the start.

2019-03-14 03:14:25 PM
Utterly meaningless political theater unless 2/3 in both houses vote to override the inevitable veto. I have much more hope for it just getting bogged down in court for the next 3-4 years.
