My cousin attempted that.
Wrote a username/password grabbing script, then downloaded and used a brute force hack on the school computer.
He brought down the whole student system of the State University he was attending for a few hours.
That's the system that was down for a few hours, not his attendance.
Which...when they actually checked the logs and managed to catch him, almost lasted for.

/This was early nineties
//they kept him on of course, IT teachers love a student who shows 'initiative'. He has a decent job in the field now.

My kid's school also uses Power School. I suspect this was more of either poor password choice or poor password security, or both.

let he who has never stored notes in their TI calculators, albeit lists, programs or other means cast the Weeners

....or emailed to themselves five pre-written essays for their English 101 final because we had to type it in the internet connected computer lab and print it out there when we were done typing.  Obviously we were not allowed to bring in any disks (precursor to jump drives for you kids).  Notes had to be hand written and you didn't know which two of the five topics/books to study from where going to be selected.

It's not "hacking" when you watch a teacher type their password and then use it to log in.

Nick Nostril: Wrong Matthew Broderick movie?

To end the confusion here, Matthew Broderick's character hacked his high school's computer system to change his grades in two separate movies (Ferris Bueller's Day Off and WarGames).

I've always wanted to see a WarGames sequel where his character is working in tech as a Wozniak type while the company is run by Ferris Bueller in a Steve Jobs type role.

Nah. The trick is to change a huge number of grades to sow suspicion everywhere.

Nope. Ferris changed his attendance record, not his grades. The grade change occured in War Games.

Yeah but then they will just wipe all the grades

I'm very familiar with Power School. One of the students most likely watched one of the clerks entering their password

We need to stop teaching kids that only 6 to 12 colleges in the country are worth attending. Also, when we implement universal undergrad, we'd better go ahead and pay for trade and vocational school as well. We'd all be better off if kids didn't feel they were condemned to be factionless if they don't get into college.

If it's cybersecurity, changing your grades might bethe class.

CSB.. Back in college I was doing some active directory browsing using some freeware at my state university.

Found a strange "Password" field.  looked up my own AD account, and noticed it was indeed my registration password.  (the important one, you know, the one you need to drop classes, add classes, get transcripts, etc).

I tested out a few of them... Totally got in.  I didn't do anything..

/I did Let the IT admins know.  They told me to keep my mouth shut for a while.  A few days later the passwords were gone and they offered me an internship.
