Fark has followed a similar course in decline in number page views, I'm guessing, although I don't have access to the raw numbers.

Just a fifth?

As somebody who draws porn, the effects of Tumblr's porn ban has been apparent all around me. Thankfully, I'd never uploaded any of my own work to Tumblr-I'd always thought it was unintuitive-but I've had no shortage of friends and fellow artists who've had their galleries go up in smoke as though Thanos had just jerked off with the Infinity Gauntlet, and suddenly had to relocate their entire livelihood to another platform, sometimes having to rebuild their entire presence.

They're probably only counting deleted accounts, not the merely abandoned ones.

Does adult content include photos of people drinking whiskey, or bottles thereof? Because then losing a fifth would be appropriate.

I wish everone would acknowledge that Tumblr's so-called ban has changed nothing. All the porn that was on Tumblr before December 17 is still on Tumblr.

BUT FEMALE PRESENTING NIPPLES THO!!!!

Yeah pr0n on Tumblr  is a little like Snapchat now... post some nudes and eventually the images will get banned, but it can happen in hours, days, or maybe never.

I'm still amazed but not shocked that Verizon has basically said (through their actions) "women's titties are gross amd immoral, but Nazis and white power is totes ok."

I was actually predicting a 25% drop, so I wasn't in the ballpark, but I was in the same city as the ballpark.

So? Oath don't care. Tumblr is a money sink for them. They'll slowly kill the platform through a combination of neglect and uneven rules, then launch (or buy) something new.

There are a crap-ton more ads on Tumblr now.  Like every third post is an ad for Discover card.

It was estimated, saw as I Googled recently, that 20% of the content there is porn. That being 1/5th fractionally, I'd say it's a number they'd have anticipated while making this decision.

I hadn't been there in a long time, logged in last week to discover my entire classic Hollywood page was hidden for sensitive material. I complained, an actual person looked at it to see it was not even remotely porn, and set it free again.

What this showed me was that if you do have actual "sensitive material," you can't even see it yourself unless you had the site marked as private. That seems highly misguided.

You're within 5%, plenty close enough to keep you in the majors.

Tumblr probably doesn't see themselves losing anything of value, either.  They couldn't monetize porn effectively.  Advertisers wouldn't want their ads on someone's furry-feed.  So people who make Tumblr porn are just eating up server space and bandwidth, and users viewing porn are eyeballs without dollar signs.  It's like kicking out a guy from the comic store who just reads and chats all day and never buys anything.  "I'll never shop here again!" he declares.  K.

That's way less than I thought would leave, and honestly it's probably better for Tumblr in the long term.
Those users were useless to mainstream advertisers anyway.

You can show people ending a life, with all the attendant anger and malice cold-blooded murder requires, on TV. You can even show it graphically in movies, and it'll be distributed in major theater chains nationwide.

You cannot show people "creating" life, even with all the attendant love and support that act deserves, on TV. You cannot get distributors to show that in theater chains nationwide.

I'd figured it was due to sometimes overzealous/inconsistent thread moderation. But yeah, I don't have the raw numbers either!

The irony being that finding porn on tumblr is still a trivial task.

There's still plenty there. However the filters and censor bots are supposed to work, they don't work well. Everything still shows up but there's less of it.

Some accounts have more deletions than others. I'd guess they get rechecked more often. I don't think they're looking at every post in real time at any rate.

It's worse than that.

20% of their users quit in one month (mid December to mid January).

About as many more stopped using Tumblr by mid February.

Where would white power, Nazi titties fall?  and would the darker part of the titty be oppressed by the whiter part or would they get along?

OK so the number of page views is actually down something like 29%, which is even worse.

Tumblr was really cool for a long time if you had an interest in some niche community of any sort, but particularly sex-related content. My best friend had a Tumblr with about 24,000 followers devoted to a very specific kink. It's an actual shame to lose that because it turns out that people whose interests aren't well served by mainstream adult sites really did build communities there and that shiat is gone/fragmented now so things are borderline impossible to find. Some people went to Twitter or private Discord servers and some went to one of 10 dozen Tumblr replacements. Those communities aren't coming back and they're going to have a hard time finding each other.

It's also a huge issue for sex workers trying to operate safely. Not just escorts or strippers, but anyone trying to market their adult businesses independently. Because, again, the loss of community is a huge problem.

Finally, and most aggravating, Tumblr only actually gives a shiat if the adult content has female appearing people in it. Naked guys and hardcore gay content is still A-OK and unfiltered even on blogs that are NOT marked NSFW. People who run blogs devoted to cute puppies can get their stuff filtered but if you're posting full-on six guys blowing seven guys stuff, the automatic filters don't find that problematic at all. I personally don't care, but there's a level of sexism and hypocrisy in that which is more than a little galling.

In short, Tumblr done farked up. It deserves the slow death it has coming, but it's a shame that people are or have lost the links to other people who like the same (adult) stuff they do.

I wonder what the financial impact of losing a fifth of your userbase is, and whether the financial impact of hiring human moderators and investing in better automated detection tools would have outweighed it.

The problem on Tumblr wasn't the porn, it was kiddy porn a small number of users insisted on posting.

When faced with the problem of kiddie porn being posted faster than it could be taken down, Tumblr tried relying on technical solutions like the database of file hashes of known kiddy porn images that is used by law enforcement, and machine learning, but they still couldn't get ahead of it.

If porn was beloved by advertisers the way it is popular with everyone else, then maybe they could have paid a large numbers of human moderators.

As it is, they decided it just wasn't worth it. Machine learning does a somewhat better than half assed job of detecting nudity, so it's more cost effective to just ban that.

Not as much of one as Sports by Brooks.

Tumblr was a place for camgirls to blog their boobs and MySpace refugees who didn't want their parents to see their narcissistic poetry on Facebook. Now, Tumblr is about like TypePad without the news agencies propping it up.

But it actually isn't. Lots of stuff disappeared, and many of the people who were producing it went away to start over somewhere else. But you're correct in the sense that there is still very much a TON of porn on Tumblr, which is what I don't understand at all: How did this "ban" accomplish anything Tumblr claimed it was supposed to do? Any potential buyer they're trying to impress with their wholesome anti-porn posturing can just look for themselves at all the porn still there. What was the big idea?

The prevailing theory is that the people running Tumblr have no actual clue about what they're doing, and their tech crew is lost in the wilderness somewhere.

Every action they've taken over the last year or so is pretty adequately explained by a boss asking for something moderately difficult (like filtering out the worst obvious offenders), but the people who are trying to implement the plans aren't smart enough to do it right.

Such is, for me, uniformly followed by a timeout.  And I'll never know which comment did it, thereby leading to endless timeouts.

There is a long, long, long history of our society preferring fascist and puritanical beliefs more than liking women's titties.  It's hardly anything new with Trump supporters.

That's some great parody, but it's worthwhile to remember that, like most of the big social sites, all of those are currently run by Democrats and leftists...
