Well that's some traffic on takeoff.

2019-03-14 06:08:44 AM
The lady was definitely in the wrong and needs to review the rules of the road before getting back in the cockpit.  The driver on the right ALWAYS has the right-of-way. She should have stopped and let the car pass before crossing the road.

Video mentions that the instructor was in control of the plane when it crashed. I'm no pilot but wouldn't that suggest some sort of mechanical failure rather than a rookie mistake?

2019-03-14 09:09:04 AM
That plane never used it's proper turning signals and it's not polite to cut someone off on the road like that and here I thought making a right turn from the left lane was rude.

2019-03-14 09:09:21 AM
At least it wasn't flying slow in the left lane.

It always amazes me that a tv station website can have such lousy video play capabilities on mobile.

I think they are so loaded up with ads that nothing actually works right on the page.

The sound also only comes out of the left speaker.

Possibly. But I've seen some students do their damnest to kill an instructor as the slow-to-react instructor tries to salvage what little airspeed and altitude he or she has.

Student didn't succeed in takeoff and the instructor took control immediately so they didn't die in a fiery crash?

/have no idea if that's possible

Hopefully the pilot honked his horn (politely, of course since this is Canada).

Here's the best I could do to fix that:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9PqLfjuafvs

I tried finding the original video without the newsbot flapping her head and talking in that fake newsreader voice over it. This is at least the Canadian news without the Canadian news website loaded with ads.

Former pilot here. If I'd had a student who had the plane pointing in that direction after takeoff, I'd have taken control whether it was mechanical or the student's failure to maintain control.

Hard to tell if it is the frame rate, but it does appear that the prop was windmilling instead of under power.

This.

Student was taking off.  Maybe power-on stall or lack of rudder control. Instructor took over and salvaged the best of a bad situation.

That is Highway 7 in Markham, I used to drive along there to get to work.  The traffic is horrible and people drive like maniacs.  I can guarantee that that was the third plane to turn left on that yellow.

It's 16th Avenue, not Highway 7.
I was caught in the resulting traffic backup on 404 when this happened. This is normally my exit.

KangTheMad: But will she get her pilot's license?

Maybe, if she can get back on the horse.

A couple gears ago, I worked a student on a first solo flight that wiped out on the runway. After I moved all the other airplanes around, I spent the rest of my free time talking to this poor, terrified, crying kid until the rescue trucks would get to it.

I was happy to hear a few months later that the kid got back in and certified.

/these planes are insured by the flight schools, and they know this is always within the realm of probability.
//When I was in the AF, I helped clean up after another solo pilot accidentally hit the eject button on takeoff.
///...and another AF solo who did something wrong, went off the runway,  dug an impressive trench, and took out several lights.

As long as the pilot is okay, we can make fun of these all day long.

Indeed.

"Initially, he appeared to be a below-average pilot. He struggled to control his aircraft, and he crashed during his first flight at the controls."

This, of course, is from the Red Baron's Wikipedia bio...

Yep.  My old multi-engine instructor got badly burned in a crash when a student put it down in the dirt way too hard and way too fast...don't think the student made it, iirc.

But I also had one memorable check ride with an incompetent jackass of an FAA examiner, so...

Experience is usually good, but not all experienced people are competent.

Just proves putting a parachute on a plane does not always make it safer. The plane was a SR-20 according to the video and they have chutes built in. However, if the plane is not far enough above the ground the chute does no good and may do harm. Rule of thumb is if you are going to crash a light plane, fly it all the way into the ground, hopefully aiming for something soft; cheap and near help.

I re-watched the vid and they said they were doing touch and goes. I guess it would make sense that the student made a mistake and the instructor took over to try and salvage the situation.

I'd guess a loss of directional control on the go.

Everyone here is assuming the student's gender and personal pronouns.

You should be ashamed of yourselves.

Ah, I stand corrected.  You're right though, it's too narrow to be 7.  (In my defense, I moved to New Brunswick in 2016 and spend most of my days drinking to blot out the memory of the traffic)

The best thing about local news websites is how 'local' they think the internet is. Sometimes it's impossible to tell what country they're in let alone the city.

A student pilot can still be the cause of an engine failure if the instructor's not paying attention. Forgetting to turn on the fuel pump, not finding the water in the fuel tank, checking the oil and not tightening a cap or something, etc.

If the location of the local newsite isn't clear just click the weather button, usually at the top. That's how I try and figure it out anyhow.

I looked outside and it's sub zero and snowing but my 'local news' site says it's sunny and so hot I should stay inside. Also it seems a roving pack of kangaroos caused a disturbance on a golf course.
