I was playing with a Blackmouth Cur just today (we have a regular customer who brings one in).  He calls it the 'Old Yeller' dog.

He's right! The dog in Ol' Yeller was a Cur.

The breed originated in the American colonies, for farm use. They eventually became regionalized..the Florida Blackmouth herds cattle and pins wild hogs down. The cur is also a friendly and loyal family companion.

I believe the dog in the novel was a blackmouth cur, but the dog in the movie was not.  My wife and I are adopting a BMC girl.  We should be getting her any time now.

Good luck with the cur. They are hounds, so be gentle with training, but firm. Also, be patient. My gal is 4, and I periodically "refresh" her obedience with a buzzer collar and treats.

Be prepared to hunt all night!

She is very sweet and chill from what I can tell.  I have a history of firm but loving training, particularly early on.  She was found in Lubbock, so no indication of FL.

Bless you folks for taking her in. She will be a fine animal for you, I'm sure.

Thanks!  Like I said, she could definitely use a bit of consistency and discipline, but she seems like the sweetest girl.
