tl;dr: Why does Tucker Carlson always have Tucker Carlson Face?

2019-03-13 11:59:33 AM
True, subby, but this is kind of a fun read. Particularly:

His offensiveness was unremarkable, as offensiveness goes. It was uncreative and uninspired. I'm bored by his offensiveness.

Since his raison d'etre is being a dumbass right-wing provocateur, I'm going to bet that, amidst all the recent harrumphing from everyone TC is dismissing, that line cuts him the deepest. And I did like her closing regarding his eyebrows:

It's the expression of privileged people who, squinting into the horizon, fear they can spot the waning of that privilege. It's the expression of someone who knows they're still untouchable, but only for now.

This is the heart of white reactionary backlash: if we are forced to be on equal footing with other people, we lose. If we're not on top & in charge, we're "forgotten." If we don't get to abuse you any more, we're the victims. The core animating force on the right, in a nutshell. https://t.co/CUXd3PY8wv

Tucker Carlson is the media version of Lindsey Graham; a windsock who leans toward whatever brand of right-wing noise gets him money and attention.

2019-03-13 02:53:02 PM
it's simpler, because you see it with every conservative from Bill-O to angry posters: they are being persecuted. They are never wrong, it's never their fault, to apologize is to show Weakness. The only emotion to express is rage at being questioned. A house of cards stuck together with insecurity.

You know, the party of personal responsibility.

It's his version of sealioning: if he can gum up the discussion by forcing you to go back to first principles to explain every point - "Why is calling Iraqis 'semi-literate monkeys' offensive? Why shouldn't we encourage young women to explore their sexuality? Why is child marriage wrong, when both participants and their parents approve? What is 'truth'?" - you'll get annoyed or bored and walk away, leaving this human brow furrow to declare victory to the legions of idiots who think that is owning the libs.

Dr Dreidel: It's his version of sealioning:

I never heard the term before.  For others who a stupid like me: Sea-Lioning is an Internet slang term referring to intrusive attempts at engaging an unwilling debate opponent by feigning civility and incessantly requesting evidence to back up their claims.

Heh, this what I do when I discussing something with a trumper.  Ask simple questions like "How so" and "Do you have a link to back that up".  It takes no effort for me but makes them jump through hoops to answer my queries.  It is kinda fun really.

That's giving TC a lot of credit. Maybe subconsciously he realizes it, and that drives the instinctive fear, but consciously, he doesn't understand he has privilege, and therefore cannot contemplate losing it.

For your second point, there's a cool movie that's making the rounds called "Slut in a Good Way". See it if you get the chance.

As a fan of alt-history, my first thought upon seeing the term sea-lioning was any massive boondoggle of a military operaton that worked only in the timeline in which is was featured because the plot says so. Named after the German operation to invade England in WW2, which Germany was woefully unprepared to actually do.

Guys, everyone else is saying they're a victim of things. I want to be a victim, too!

-Okay, what have people done to you, or even republicans in general, that's so dramatically affected your ability to even simply exist in every-day society?

People say Trump is dumb and call me a racist because I support putting foreign kids in cages and tell them that brown people should go back where they come from!

Because his target demographic is conservative white men, who as a group seem to think that they are the victims of all the world's wrongs, so his act plays really well to that audience.

Well, just think of how much better it was being a white man when white men could do what they wanted. Think of what we've lost!

Which is just amazing to me.
I'm a liberal white male and shockingly aware of my privilege and the way I can just live my life with hardly any of the threats or static that a woman or person of color experiences.

"semiliterate primitive monkeys." eh?

Good thing civilization was started by White People and not in Iraq.
