They'll never do it, but I'm an advocate of You Win, You're In, You Lose, You're Home.

You don't see the major league teams giving at-large slots to teams that don't make the playoff.s

You just described "wild cards".  Which the NFL and MLB both use.

...that is the complete opposite of what should happen. NCAA Football is a mess right now because there are 130 teams in the FBS and only 4 get a chance to play for the national championship.

NCAA Basketball has over 350 teams, and 68 get to dance. That's about the right distribution, I'd say (about 20 percent). Most pro leagues oversaturate their playoffs to the point where the regular season is meaningless, while the NCAA has one that's just right and one where one loss is likely the end of your championship run, and two is right out.

So, only the conference winners should gets bids to the NCAA basketball tournament? This thread got way off scope here considering the NCAA basketball tournament is vastly different than all the pro league playoffs, given it needs +30 at large teams to fill out the field.

The one thing that has to be done away with are the play-in games. Here's a radical idea: How about having fewer at-large teams?

64 is the perfect number. Why mess with a good thing?

Because a couple of new power conferences formed and the NCAA was getting killed for leaving out mid-majors as it was.

$eriously?

Hell, I'm kinda surprised it's not 128. Half the field, just like football bowl games.

This is what it was before 1951, when they expanded it to 16 teams.

I would rather see the automatic bids go to the regular season champs. Reward months of hard work not a good 3-4 days. If you win the conference tourney but not the regular season then you get to be in a play in against others in that situation.

What is good about men's basketball is ANYONE has a chance to win it all.  All a MAAC team has to do is win their conference tourney, and then 6 more games, and they will be crowned national champs.  Everything is decided on the floor.

Football.  Yeah, win all your games and you can STILL be left out from a 2-loss team who passes the eye test.

I think the play-in games should be for at-large teams only. The kids that won their conference tourney and celebrate because they're going to the Big Dance instead get to spend a Tuesday or Wednesday night in Dayton. Screw that. You get an automatic bid then you're playing on Thursday or Friday and can spend the weekend soaking in the atmosphere after you get throttled by a 1-seed (offer not valid if you're playing Virginia, obviously). The final 8 at-large teams should get sent to Dayton to fight for the chance to dance.

...the NCAA doesn't consider them "play-in" games, any more than the B1G considers today's first two games "play-in" games.  This is the tournament. There are four extra slots (which could be rectified by dropping 4 at-large bids, but greed rules and they stay...)

Currently the First Four is the four lowest-rated automatic qualifiers and the four lowest-rated at-large teams.

FAAAARK!!  Wilbon predicted this on PTI yesterday.

He's going to gloat, especially b/c Tony picked the 'Zags.

Even though college teams can pretty much have near 100% turnover from previous years you wonder if past years, who do you say, failure to live up to expectations, has an influence on seeding.

They were exceptional columnists with the WaPo and good reporters.  Since going full-time at ESPN Wilbon has tried to become some He-Man woman hater parody.  Anything to protect players or show sportsmanship makes you WEAK.  His whole schtick has turned into a series of angry Wilboners.

True....but I still like the show.

But Papi on Highly Questionable is a national treasure.

Zags are the exception. They'll probably get a 2.

The other predictions: The best 2 of 3 of NC, Duke, and Virginia from the ACC tourney get 1's, the last gets a 2. The other 1 seeds should be Kentucky and Michigan State (though if Kentucky drops the first round and Tennessee wins the SEC tourney, they'l probably get the 1). The last 2 probably goes to Texas Tech.

Gonzaga will be a #1, guaranteed.
