Scre Facebook. Screw them in the ass. Screw them with a truck load of porcupines and hedgehogs and screw them backwards with rocket fuel.

They suspended my Instagram account today because I posted a link to my book I'm promoting.

Apparently I'm supposed to pay them to do that. So basically all I can use Instagram for is to get likes. That's it. It's as effective as taking exposure to the bank.

Again. SCREW FACEBOOK

Wrong on multiple levels.  Facebook is important because people are on Facebook.  Facebook gets attention because it connects people.  If people stop posting, Facebook stops existing.

Going further, posting "what they am doing" on Facebook is a vast percentage of Facebook.  Saying, "oh but that's also an advertisement therefore pay me," is censoring and singling out people to extract wealth.

And yet the fact remains that we're talking about a post that happens to be about a product. That is different from an ad that you should have to pay to have show up more often on other people's feeds.
Charge for a post OR track everything you do and sell it to anyone. Not both.

I've promoted all sorts of shiat on FB and Instagram and never got suspended. Sounds like you did something stupid, and now it's Facebook's fault. Like all this businesses on Yelp that treat customers like shiat, but it's Yelp's fault that customers leave bad reviews and Yelp refuses to take them down!

Let me just say from experience and knowledge: your personal data isn't worth shiat. If Facebook wrote you a check at the end of the year for all of the money they made off of your personal data (which, btw, it stops being YOUR data when you share it, genius) you'd get a nice shiny check for maybe $30 at the end of the year. I don't "share" shiat; never had a FB account, and never will. I have no social media account of any type, and after all the ratfarkery we've learned about in the wake of Trump's election, I'm feeling pretty smug about that fact.

Hell, even here I had to blank the tiny bit of personal information in my profile because I received threatening emails -- using my real name -- from some Peacer who didn't much care for my comments about his ideology.

My use of the term "personal" here means "of or relating to a person"; nothing else about its purpose or provenance is implied.

I made no such implication; as the hackers' proverb goes: "Information wants to be free".

I merely stated that Facebook's business model already makes a fortune by commoditising that information, and to charge even more for some tiny bit of promotion is just the most crass, naked cash-grab.

F*ck the Zuck. Social media may very well bring the end of our species. When the roughly 40% or so of Americans who lack all critical thinking skills were pumped full of only right-wing propaganda, all was fine and dandy.

...Right up until a certain, hard-drinking, beet-soup-loving state actor took over the megaphone. The beast is under another's control now.

Ah, I'm just ranting now.

If Warren wins it, and I genuinely hope she does, I think she's going to wind up needing to do what Obama did to assuage the "we're not ready for that yet" crowd.  Beto might be a good balancer for her, but beyond him or Booker I'm not sure there are a lot of offerings for young VP material.

You know it's perfectly legal for your ISP to monitor your browsing behavior, build a profile, and sell that on to third parties now, right?  You might think that https will protect you, but you're wrong.  That'll obscure the details, but DNS lookups are still unencrypted so they know you're a regular visitor of strappedmidgets.com.  And if the ISP and a network of sites cooperate then it's easy to tie your activity on those sites back to your real identity.  The ISP knows who you are, and the sites know what you view.  None of this has anything to do with Facebook.

FACEBOOK

Let me just say from experience and knowledge: your personal data isn't worth shiat. If Facebook wrote you a check at the end of the year for all of the money they made off of your personal data (which, btw, it stops being YOUR data when you share it, genius) you'd get a nice shiny check for maybe $30 at the end of the year. If that.

Except that you're implying you have some kind of claim to ownership over that data. Otherwise, why would it be a big deal if a company sells it?

Got it. And I think I need see where the disconnect comes from. Facebook doesn't, as a rule, "sell" personal information. You can't go to Facebook and say "here's a billion dollars, give me a list of personal information." They monetize it by renting it out to companies that want to promote their goods and services. So when they charge for advertising, that's exactly what "selling personal information" means in this context. They aren't double-dipping, because the two actions are I've and the same in this case.
