I guess it depends on what raisin they would half for labeling it like that.

It's good.  Really good.  Add it to scrambled eggs, stir-fried veggies, or anywhere else you season normally with salt and pepper.

Okay, this article is valuable and of interest to me because I have 3x $100 Trader Joe's gift cards (which is like two bags of groceries at Whole Foods, but like 16 shopping carts full at Trader Joe's).

But isn't this just an advertisement?

2019-03-10 10:23:44 PM
Remember when fewer than 90% of the featured products at Trader Joe's were ultra-high-sugar and/or ultra-high-fat products marketed to Lardass-Americans to trick them into thinking the ultra-sweet, ultra-fat products they were buying were somehow healthier than just eating Cheez-Its and Oreos? Pepperidge Farm remembers. And is also a bit pissed that TJ's has muscled into its target demographic.

And that's the most valuable and interesting information!  Thank you!  +1

I don't know the tax rate where you are.  Tag is around $15, but here in WA that's over 20 out the door.

They had a lobster ravioli  I was kind of fond of.

I'm allergic to shiatake mushrooms. This is basically shiatake mushroom powder.
It was the hardest thing to quantify, as it took three days between eating a shiatake mushroom and breaking out in pin prick rash. Eventually I had to purposely eat the mushrooms just to see...and yup. that's the culprit. It was also odd because I could eat those for years until they suddenly became evil to me.

There's other ways to get 'umami' ...as mentioned the 'accent' powder is MSG. (and the mushroom umami powder is basically for the msg).

You can also use nori seaweed crumbled to add 'umami' to dishes.

So, people with mushroom allergies. (tho mine is very specific) might want to steer clear of this product.

Nothing on that list really interests me but I do love TJs. Wish there were one closer, I'd go there more often.

Tandoori chicken, please.

They got a bunch of frozen Indian dinners, but not THE dish I go to buffets for. Costco briefly had some tandoori-style grilled chicken strips that went well in salads and such.

Trader Joe's bargains:

Hummus (1/2 the price of "normal" stores, twice as good)
Coffee (1/2 the price of Whole Foods, just as good)
Cheese (same price as blocks of Kraft, 1000% better)

2019-03-11 02:16:13 AM
I am not sure what is new about the maple syrup but Trader Joe's s a good place to get it.

The hedgehog butter cookies looked good. But the 2 TJ's in my area are really too far away (I don't have a car at the moment).

Not really.  First time I ever saw a Trader Joe's (15 years ago maybe) one of my first thoughts was, these guys are really good at making processed food look hip and healthy.

Devil's Advocate: It looks like a seasoning blend that includes MSG concentrated from mushrooms.  MSG is not really by itself flavorful,, it helps enhance other flavors (or something like that), so it'd make sense that an umami blend could be better than umami powder by itself.

You know what else has a lot of MSG?  Vegemite.  But I bet it's a pretty different experience than this mushroom powder, or MSG sprinkles.

I've been eating a lot of spicy avocado humus, so it will be nice if TJ's is good and cheaper.

No MSG listed in it (other than whatever might exist as a trace amount in the listed ingredients).

Need to hit a local Asian market and get some bonita flakes to complete my umami collection.

I shop at TJ's every week. Their wines are a phenomenal value (no, I'm not a 3-buck-chuck guy, either), but beyond that, they have excellent products in nearly every category at fair prices.
Their 1-liter flavored fizzy waters are the best in the business.
Sumatran coffee beans might be the best value in the store.
Their organic half & half is tits.
The all-natural marinated lemon spatchcocked chicken is phenomenal too.
Half-salted cashews are my go-to snack.
And those little chocolate-peanut butter cups by check-out are light-years better than Reeses.
I could go on...

I share the peanut sensitivity. Almond butter is seeing more popularity, although the price is a good deal steeper. Maranatha is a good brand but I see others out there as well. BJ's has a house brand I plan on trying today at lunch.
There are now Snickers Almond Butter bars in the groceries in my area. Quite tasty although I need to keep them to a minimum regarding my sugar intake.

The first time I ate anything from Trader Joes was, ironically, at my local food bank. They were really good at donating almost expired products, and I just loved their breads, pastries, sandwiches, hell everything really. When I could finally afford food, I splurged once a month to get groceries from there instead of the 99 Cents store where I normally went.

I still love them to death, but I rarely shop there now since I work so much and only get off at ungodly hours when they are closed.

/Their white cheddar cheese puffs are my crack

jaytkay: Trader Joe's bargains:

Coffee (1/2 the price of Whole Foods, just as good)

Note about the coffee: invariably if I buy whole bean coffee at TJ, it is super oily and when I put it through my (admittedly fancy) grind and brew coffee machine, it doesn't feed properly. (So if you have one of those, grind outside the coffee machine.)

/here, I'll save you the trouble: username checks out.

Almonds are problematic for me as well, so sunflower seed butter is much better news.

How do you 'half-salt' a cashew? Do they divide the container & put the salted on one side & the unsalted on the other?
