Roast beef and mashed potatoes
Same as when I'm feeling happy, or ambivalent, or a waitress.

My wife has a dish called comfort chicken which is cubed chicken breast braised in chicken stock with thyme/rosemary/black pepper then poured over mashed potatoes.  Pair with booze of choice till drunk.

Slow roast pork shoulder.

On-Cor Salisbury Steaks. Because when I feel like a sad, garbage human, I need sad, garbage food.

If you're feeling roast beef when you feel a waitress, you might be Donald Trump.

Or grilled cheese and tomato soup.

Yakisoba or... and bear with me here...  Kraft Mac and Cheese.  The tube/powder kind.  Dunno what it is, maybe childhood memories, but I'll be swinging my feet under my chair like a kid by the time I'm done.

Spam.   Bear with me here.  We were dirt poor  for a period when I was a kid.   I mean home canned green beans for breakfast (at least we had a garden) and we churned our own butter from the glass gallon jar of milk we'd get from the farmer down the road.   Fried bologna was not uncommon.

So getting fried Spam was a real treat in that period.  Mom would boil up some corn meal, chill it in a loaf pan and then cut in slices similar to the slices of Spam and fry both.   With sorghum syrup.   This was special.

To this day, Spam is my go to comfort food, even though I can't really stand the salty stuff.   It helped in Hawaii and with my Samoan friends, though.   Spam sushi wasn't that weird to me. :)

drop a beaten egg in before adding noodles to the broth.  Somehow it makes all the difference.

Any kind of home made soup. Taco soup, kale soup, Italian Wedding soup, vegetable beef soup, chili or ham and beans. I must have been feeling really sad this winter because I've pretty much lived on soups the past few months.

Pot roast with all the fixins if it's just a mild malaise. Something more intense requires a massive pile of mashed potatoes and gravy and a basket of biscuits for smearing said potatoes on them.

Revenge, preferably when served cold.

Chinese food. There's a place near my house that makes amazing Sesame Chicken and crab rangoon. Is it healthy? Hell no. When I'm sad/depressed, I don't want rabbit food. I want something to make me forget, even momentarily, that I feel like shiat. I love me a nice, big salad, but that's not the kind of food that puts a smile on my face.

Usually Taco Bell, but I've been cutting back on fast food so I don't know what it would be after that. Guess I'll find out.

Kielbasa, with good mustard and horseradish, with boiled potato and sauerkraut on the side.  Drizzle pepper and more mustard on the potato after slicing it into half-medallions.

Not many foods give me any kind of comfort-emotional-response vibe, but this just tastes like home.

Velveeta shells and cheese and Gorton's Fish Sticks.

Again, a childhood memory.

If I'm far from home and feeling blue, I seek out a 24-hour diner displaying the magic words, "Breakfast Served All Day." If I'm home, I will make a pot of soup. The entire soup process is comforting to me: from chopping and sauteing, to the slow simmer that perfumes my whole apartment, to sitting down to a bowl with a good piece of bread on the side.

*bertos (fili- etc) two tacos, rice, and beans combo. It's gotten expensive though, it's upwards of ten bucks. I used to get it a lot (and not just when sad) but now it's rare for me to get it other than when the wife is traveling and I'm eating alone and don't feel like going to the sit-down Mexican place that I prefer (which costs about the same and is a lot nicer and the food is better).

Since the birth of our daughter though, wife hasn't had to travel for work, then changed jobs to where she doesn't travel for work anymore, so less opportunity.

Grilled cheese with tomato soup and noodles.  Make tomato soup.  Prepare macaroni.  combine and serve.  My childhood poverty meal.

About three years ago, when my mom was dying, my then 8-year-old daughter made me meatloaf and mashed potatoes for dinner because she knew it was my favorite.

A thick, creamy, bacony potato soup.

Mashed potatoes with a big blob of butter & a really rich gravy.

Cheap, crappy, easy to make food, high in salt and fat: Instant ramen. Stouffer's salisbury steak and mac & cheese. Canned corned beef hash with fried eggs. Grilled cheese and tomato soup. Chicken nuggets.

I'm an excellent cook, and well aware of good nutritional practices, but sometimes I just need to partake of these garbage foods from my youth.
