Yeah, but CM still made less than the far superior BvS!

Everybody went to see it to see how bad it was. Only for this reason.

Since this seems to prove that misogynistic neckbeards have almost no effect of the success or failure of movies (no matter how vociferous their rants on YouTube are) can we please stop giving them constant attention and just ignore them from now on?

First off, it's still sunday.
Second, I thought the argument was that Captain Marvel was a D list chick who's movie was terrible.
Third, stop touching yourself and get a date.  You're embarrassing.

\Yes, went over the top - on purpose - for effect.
\\You might have been trolling, but your comment will be repeated for real by jackasses later and I have things to do today.

A character that was unknown before the last year or so loses out to the two biggest superhero names in existence.

Well I guess marvel should just quit making movies.

"Astounding" and "place in history"? I mean, it's a good movie, very good even, but that's a good opening for an MCU film. Not really anything epic.

No.  That is exactly what people did int he 60s and 70s with evangelical Christians.  How's that working out for us?  People didn't say "If we just ignore the polio, it will go away"; they set about burning it out with fire.  And if it comes back, we hit it with more fire.  Why you think treating this infection any differently will be more effective is beyond me.  You've literally anti-vaxxing evil.

So Gender equality isn't in danger anymore, right? It has been saved, because box office returns!! It's also nice that she's the first strong woman worth looking up to in the MCU.

/White male here. Enjoyed the movie a lot. And I thought Brie Larson was great. I even liked the girl power message, though, transparently obvious as it was, it needed to be.

And, if the estimates hold, it's only short by about 6 million.  Which is like pulling even with the door of the first-place driver on the opening lap of the race.

I'd wager Larson's engine will last a lot longer than Affleck's did.

Yeah. People tend to spend $15 plus another $10 for soda and popcorn and take three hours out of their lives just to show up some rando on the internet. You nailed it. Bravo.

Movies don't make $160M in their opening weekend because some opinionated groups are "stigginit" to their perceived enemies.

They make that much because they have widespread appeal for the general public, e.g. people who have never heard the terms "SJW" or "Incel", etc.

I went last night w my wife and one of her friends. Some guy they work w had been going on for weeks w the incel talking points. They wanted to make a point.

Some I guess we went for stigginit. That being said, I loved it!

Loved the casting. Loved the Skrulls. Loved the pacing and lacked of extended, redundant fight scenes. Loved the humor. Loved all the filled in backstory. It's really good.

Clutch2013: Starkaryen: Yeah, but CM still made less than the far superior BvS!

I know you jest, but it really can't be overstated how hard the DCEU will go down in the textbooks as a shining example of how NOT to Hollywood.

The only thing I can come up with is that when Nolan's films did well, the entire takeaway at DC was "We must grimdark the most grimdarkiest of all the grimdarks - because only grimdark will ever sell again in cinema" and so, everything is in flat washed out colors, everyone is a grade-A shiat-weasel, and there is no reason to root for even a single person on screen at any time.  The few times they didn't hew to the Grimdark Uber Alles philosophy they get a glimmer of success - and then decide that what they need to do is add a few more tons of grimdark to that to make it really successful.  Also, they seem to have cobbled together an over-arching plan on a Denny's menu late on night and mistook the pancake section for the Flash sub-franchise.

Meanwhile, Marvel's take seems to be "We're gonna blow some shiat up, make really shiatty jokes, go for whatever the opposite of grimdark is, and generally just slap Groot on everything - but with a goddamned plan"  It doesn't always work, but it seems to be more crowd-friendly than whatever the fark DC is doing.

/I fully expect a Shazam sequel to be about how he turns into a homeless man murder-raping prostitutes to show humanity to utter futility of life.
//It's like Creepy Howie got reincarnated as the entire DCEU upper management at once.

I'm going to see it next weekend, but I honestly dont care about this character from what I've seen in trailers. I'm only seeing it because I want to understand everything that happens in Endgame, and if that means watching a few movies I dont care about then so be it.

Should've included we 100% would have seen it in the theater, like we have almost every other MCU flic, just not on a crowded opening weekend.

Did sunny leave out Alita at #5 for a reason?

2019-03-10 01:40:38 PM
It was somewhere between Iron Man 2 and Iron Man 3.

Perhaps about a Thor, Dark World level of quality?

Also, how did they not play "I get knocked down, then I get up again" during the big motivational montage?

2019-03-10 01:41:42 PM
Just a fwiw, $153 million would be the 7th biggest opening in the MCU, even adjusting for inflation*. That would be only behind the Avengers movies (Civil War was basically an Avengers movie), Iron Man 3, and Black Panther. And if that holds to form it'll clear $400 million domestically. Not sure what any of that means, but there it is

*That's ticket price inflation not actual inflation. If going by actual inflation Guardians 2 came in slightly higher

Saw it last night with the wife (love that I could use "it's not just a S-H movie, it's about empowerment" to get her to agree). Had a great time and she only snored loud twice (one elicited a big laugh from those around us). I felt like they tried (and succeeded) to make it a 90s action movie with 2019 production values. Gotta watch it a few more times to catch some of the visual jokes and Easter eggs. Goose the cat is better than half of the other MCU heroes.

For the vast majority, no.

But for the people who love screaming at the incel bogeyman for hours online and say shiat like "I'LL BUY ME TWO TICKETS AND SEE IT TWICE! TAKE THAT MANBABIES!" (you know, some of the more vocal posters in these shiatshow threads)? Yeah, I can believe it.

TBF I think it was originally up because they wanted a sequel.  I saw Alita as well and it was a good movie.  But then the incels hijacked it as a way to stiggint to Captain Marvel.

None of the other strong female characters had lead billing in a movie.

Some of the characters in your graphic should have had their own movie by now.
Some were strong villains or secondary characters that wouldn't carry their own flick.
And some were minor characters that people forgot as they were walking out of the theater.

Ayesha of the Sovereign? Really?
