They assume it's someone feeding deer, but it could just be a really crappy truck driver spilling his load.

Or perhaps someone who is indifferent to deer, but hates people(or cars).

They used to throw unwanted silage, corn, or other similar excess feed material at the side of the road for grip. Eventually they changed it to sand/salt when they started having city/county level plowing being more regular.

So this could someone really old, or their grandkid.

That warning kind of makes me want to throw more corn on the side of the roads.

Near Johnson City, Texas a few years back this same thing was happening.  Turned out a local guy who owned a body shop was "chumming for business."  They found him with several bags of corn in the back of his pick-up.  He claimed he was picking up the corn from the road.  They believed him so hard they gave him free room and board.

There's no way someone can handle all of this without getting 'contaminated' by the product themselves.
Authorities just have to search for the corny person.

Quite unlikely a farmer is moving corn in the dead of winter.

They should be looking for the guy who just mounted a heavy wrecker push bumper to the front of his truck, and still have a few corn kernels in the bed.

Sure, but if they hit the vehicle in front of you, free venison!

(In the UK, you are not allowed to pick up roadkill you hit yourself, but you can pick it up if someone else hit it)

This area of the UP has very few farms, and even fewer with animals, and no silos. My money is on grip/bait.

Or -- until a farmer's entire crop of corn is unsaleable because it was supposed to be organic, but got contaminated by pollen from genetically-modified corn. Or Monsanto sues farmers because there's Monsanto-patented corn growing on their fields without a license.

Corn pollen travels. Assuming this road-corn is viable, some is going to sprout on the sides of the fields, and if there are any corn farms nearby, it will pollinate those plants, which has the potential to cause all kinds of problems depending on what the farmers are trying to grow.

Deer baiting should be illegal. I never saw such a pussy enterprise in my life--mounds of bait in every clearing, with a clear ATV trail leading right up to it. Permanent tree stands everywhere (illegal). 50-pound bags of corn, carrots, etc. sold all over the place, for all these pussy "hunters" who wouldn't know how to walk a kilometer if they were starving to death.

That's really all I need to know about all those rugged individualists who ride ATVs everywhere, because most of them are too fat to get out of their monster trucks, which they NEED, of course, because they live in the UP and things are tough up here, you bet! They had to plow with their ATV for almost an hour this morning, right before they went out to the deer bait pile and checked it. It's not hunting season, but the deer don't know that. Hahahaha, little joke there! Of course they wouldn't poach!

There are some back roads where i live with odd zigzagging ruts that seem to reappear even after grading. Oddly enough there is a sketchy used tire shop back there a couple miles off the main highway. I have gotten 2 random flats now around the area and im starting to suspect this might be actually happening. The ruts dont avoid potholes or anything either they just kind of go around seemingly normal patches of road
