So Rays players might be splitting time between the city with already too many strip clubs for it size and a city known for the quality of its strip club and escort scene.

I bet their wives are thrilled.

Someone should tell the Quebecois that purchasing a time share in Florida is often highly regrettable, and that very quickly.

Florida never needed a 2nd baseball team as the Marlins have had shiatty attendance for 25 years now. I think the only purpose of the Rays in MLB is to give the Yankees and Red Sox an extra 9-10 "home" games.

Actually, the Rays as an organization are pretty solid, so if they did move to Montreal, they'd be in a good position:

-Play the Yankees and Red Sox (both are which are very close to MTL) 38 times a year.
-They'd have an instant rivalry with the Blue Jays - play for the "Canadian Cup" for 19 games.
-Better fanbase: I think the Expos actually did have a good fanbase, at least until 1994-95. The ownership just dicked around to the point of no return. A stable owner and a suitable stadium (about 33,000ish) could probably get all of Quebec (about the population of Virginia) and the rest of Eastern Canada to support the "new" Expos.

Give it up, Montreal, MLB ain't coming back to your town without a literal Act of God being involved.

I give it a low chance of success, but if we can build a stadium (with little to no public funding), we're gold.  Plenty of rich folks up here willing to pony up some dough.  People still miss MLB games here, and if they can build a downtown stadium then attendance will be strong.

Steinbrenner was a major force in getting the Rays to Tampa. It was his hometown of sorts (he was originally from Cleveland, but set up in Tampa when he struck out on his own with his inheritance) and the Yankees' corporate offices and single-A team are in Tampa (in what many say is a nicer stadium than The Trop).

I was a little too young back then to know the intricate details of why TB got an expansion team, but I read articles that said he pretty much spearheaded a team in FL. I don't think his sons have the same sway that George did, and if they put up a fuss about the Rays moving to TB, the rest of the owners will tune them out.

Tampa tried to get an MLB team for 3 decades. That awful dome stadium, their most serious push, opened in 1990.

The strike was an excuse. It was Loria that pulled the trigger.

Loria, Selig, and John Henry orchestrated a scheme to get them to DC because DC was going to give them a free stadium

Yes, they will. They need to figure out which golf course to start the week off from.

Easy, start with all the courses in the Montreal area, then overwinter on the Tampa links.

They think that, because the Trop is bad the team will play games in an even worse stadium?

This sounds like them laying the foundation of a "if you don't pay for a stadium we will move" campaign and nothing more.

It epistles out great. The point of that was to kill off the Expos.

I may be in favor of Montreal getting a team again, but this is nothing but a 'build me a stadium or we'll run away' tactic.  They're only using Montreal as bait because people there want another team.  If the Rays front office really wants to play someplace else, I hear Indianapolis has a decent minor-league field...

It would put great.

I was OK with baseball leaving MTL when it did. But man, having that last season end with no post season was just crushing. It took me a LONG time to watch baseball again, and by that time the roid monkeys and massive contracts took over. What could have been, we will never know.

Except it's not Rays ownership saying "build us a stadium or we'll move to Montreal for 40 games", its some Canadian group saying "we should purchase a stake in the Rays and have them play in Montreal for 40 games".

Playing 15-20 games in Orlando would probably be a better option.

They are finally stating the obvious - Tampa Rays have a better shot at playing cup-winning hockey.

I heard Lawrence Stroll was going to buy the Rays, move the team to Montreal, and make Lance a starting pitcher.

Remember when MLB used to use Tampa-St. Petes as a landing site if teams didn't get a new stadium. How's that working out?

Yep, it's another taxpayer-funded-stadium shakedown attempt, one that the people of Florida (and pretty much everyone else) are well sick and tired of. A sportsball owner wants a new palace for his sportsball team? Let *them* come up with the funding from *private* sources, not the public coffers (which have more pressing needs to be paid for out of them).
