This sounds like something a passive-aggressive parent would say to try to make their kid come to church.

Good for them.  I remember the Blessing of the Animals (usually around the Feast of St Francis) going back to the early 1970s, but am sure it predates that.  The first time we observed it, we had dogs, cats, some birds, and somebody even brought a lamb.  Hadn't heard of anyone doing it on an ongoing basis.
