Yeah, I'm sure the reviews are very subtle:

- "The star needs to smile more"
- "Snoozefest featuring a beautiful main character who won't sleep with me"
- "I was hoping this movie would distract from the total lonely shiatshow that's my life, but it didn't even manage to do that"

I really am trying to understand incels, I really am. It was hard on me as a teenager to not get to f*** all the girls I really wanted to f***, and yeah, it annoyed me that the hottest girl in school was dating a jerk. But you know, I moved on and grew up and well, jeez, I was a kid then. It would never have occurred to me to hate women in general and I don't think I would have been mad that a hot chick stars in a comic-book movie, but here we are.

What is wrong with current sci-fi boys that this keeps coming up?

I'm guessing they're all huge fans of the movie where Larson gets kidnapped and forced to have a child with her rapist/jailer who's a misunderstood "nice guy"

I honestly think a big part of the problem is exabytes of free porn. Any dude with a stiffy and half a brain can find whatever porn they want. Porn "stories" become the expected result of interactions with real women, and thus the so called 'nice guy' comes off as a nerdy creep. Added to all the porn are years of reading comics that are biased towards maleness (that they could never achieve), very poor life management and coping skills, emotional ignorance, mountain dew, a couple rejections from the female side, and voila': an incel is born.

Because a subset of 'men' have a real problem with women, and they're ruining it for the rest of you.

You can help rout it out, fix it, and improve the situation. Call out the bullshiat. Don't just sit there and roll your eyes when some dickhead farker says 'this is a dangerous era to have casual sex in college', or 'we're in the middle of an epidemic of millenial rape - when a woman has consensual sex one day then regrets the next'.

Two actual recent examples, that raised barely an eyebrow among male farkers.

/I'm not in any way accusing you of being apathetic, I'm talking in general terms.

As someone who grew up in an era when friends' parents still disinvited you from birthday parties and other events because, "Those kids play D&D and Magic and those things are THE DEVIL!!!"

The entire incel brigade can go fark themselves with a rusty serrated pitchfork.

We were ecstatic when someone outside of the geek culture clique was interested in what we were doing, especially girls.  We'd loan comics, tapes, teach rules, whatever it took to gain wider acceptance.  I was in college in the very late 90s/early 2000s when traditionally "nerdy" cultural elements became mainstream, and we were incredibly happy to see people in line with us for Episode 1 that, five years before, wouldn't have given us the time of day.  I first met Mrs. Samurai at the local Friday night showing of Rocky Horror.

It was always about wider acceptance in society.  And then these little piece of shiat neckbeards started going all No True Scotsman on people.  "Oh, you don't really appreciate comic books, you just like the movies."  And then they took their neckbeard shiat a step further by building an entire sub-culture around the fact that they're so shiatty, they can't get a date.

At least they're doing us a favor and not reproducing.

But I anticipate it will be less entertaining for me than Charlize Theron in Atomic Blonde.  And more of a placeholder/background for the heroine of Infinity War 2.

I'm no expert, but I suspect it's a clique thing that they internalized.  Back during high school, a lot of social outcasts found themselves in geeky hobbies.  They were ostracized by the more popular groups, but they convinced themselves it was because of their hobbies and interests.  Because they largely hung around other outcasts and stuck to their own insular groups, though, their social development never really finished, and they wound up as socially maladjusted adults.

Fast-forward to present day, though, and we have a lot of social acceptance for so-called "geeky hobbies," and a lot of people who don't fit the geek stereotype are openly into these things.  That's why you see this maladjustment in that subset of people who still define themselves by their geeky hobbies:  They're the people who never developed beyond that point.  They see this mainstream acceptance as somehow being an "intrusion," and are also being forced to accept the possibility that maybe the reason they've been ostracized is because of THEM, not their hobbies.

Personally, I'm a geek, but it's not all I am.  I love relaxing with a video game or superhero movie after a long day at work, but I also have a job.  I love a game of D&D on the weekends, but I also have friends to play with.  I love the way my hobbies are gaining mainstream acceptance and interest, because I want to share the fun with other people.  These guys, though, wanted to view their hobby as exclusionary, and wanted to keep others out.  Where's the fun in that?   That's why gatekeeping is such a problem, and it's why anyone who tries to make changes or point out more problematic elements gets such strong backlash.  The hobbies were a safe space for these backward attitudes for far too long, and now that people are noticing and trying to fix some of the problems, the isolationists can't handle it.

This is what makes me so angry about their gatekeeping.  We HAD insularity.  It got us strange looks and former friends' mothers telling us "I hope you find Jesus one day."  I had to drive an hour to Hungate's to buy a board game more complicated than Risk.  Now I see an entire 6-foot section at Barnes & Noble dedicated to RPGs.  Wider interest is good for everyone.

At least in my formative years, if you couldn't get a member of the opposite sex to pay attention to you, you introspected and tried to figure out what you were doing wrong. Are the things you're trying to talk to girls about interesting to them? Are you actually listening to them are just waiting for your turn to speak? Are you willing to leave your comfort zone or are you expecting the mountain to come to Muhammad? Could you stand to lose a few pounds and up your hygiene game to make yourself more attractive? Etc, etc, etc.

Now, thanks in large part to the internet, a lot of guys in that situation just aren't motivated to do that introspection. Now, they've got millions of hours of porn on demand 24/7 and online groups of like minded guys willing to reaffirm that it's everyone else's fault that perfect 10s aren't tearing their clothes off and offering themselves to them just because of their self-perceived alpha myths. They're self-sabotaging themselves to make sure they'll never get what they want and not feeling the least bit bad about hurting others on their way down.

They're not rating it, but the comments all have either a "Not Interested" or "want to see it"  tag.

Buy boy oh boy are there some salty motherfarkers in those comments...

"Larson has made it clear...men need not attend this movie."

"Larson's sexist and racist attitudes don't want me to spend money on this anyway, so here you go, Ms. Larson."

"I somehow feel that Skull are not the enemy, but that I am, since Brie Larsen has been careful to state she doesn't want the Press Tour to include types like me."

"You could not pay me to see this SJW laden, white male hating worthless POS movie. I am sick of this identity politics taking over pop culture. Brie Larson could get hit by a bus and I would not shed a tear."

It has nothing to do with sexism. It happens with every Marvel movie. DC fanbois hate that every Marvel movie so easily outdoes almost everything DC. And they word their reviews so it looks like Marvel fans being shallow, sexist, and racist.  Then the movie comes out and blows previous records away and they continue to grumble that it's still not as good as Dark Knight Rises.
