Great Pyrenees are very protective, my FIL uses them on his farm to protect his sheep.

I wonder if daddy bought those dogs steaks for dinner!?

I was thinking that was sort of the behavior exhibited.  "Damn you, bald sheep!  Back in the pen! Back!  Baaa-Ram-Ewe!"

God's looking out for every sparrow but apparently forget these young humans.

Of course an alternate theory would be that "dogs are angels" and that's much more plausible.

Of course, if you let your five year-old wander near the interstate and instead of a dog you have a cat named "Church", you could still manage to salvage the situation.

Pyrs are getting too inbred due to too many non-farm people buying them because they're "cute". Maremma sheepdogs have better guard instincts due to an overall policy of breeders only selling them into situations where they'll be true working dogs.  Also, pyrs are much more prone to conditions such as hip dysplasia.

/yes, I've owned both

Great Pyr.  They regard commands as suggestions, but God help anything that threatens something/someone they feel responsible for.  My niece has a Great Pyr, and some dirtbag tried to open her ground floor sliding glass door at 4 AM. He let them know it was a bad idea, and the dude practically left a smoke trail running away.  Their angry bark is...scary.

True statement.  Mine makes my German Shepherd sound like a chihuahua.

They back it up too.  A Great Pyr could rip an arm off at the elbow with moderate effort.  They don't want to, but they will if they feel they have to.

If you want that cross breed, I'm sure you can find a ton of them at shelters. They're terrible to train, they have mental issues, and people don't generally keep them around.
Anytime a livestock guardian dog (lgd) is bred to a herding or hunting breed of dog, you get a mess. They don't know if they're coming or going, they're instincts are in a muddle, and they have a tendency to become overly reactive or vicious.
My guess is that the 'shepherd' referred to in the article was an Anatolian Shepherd or other lgd shepherd, and not a German Shepherd.

Heh, yep - first time I met one I very nearly ran for it - and I wasn't doing anything nefarious and knew damn well the dog wasn't aggressive.  He was just happy to see his owner back after a week.  There's a level of resonance in their bark that goes straight to "I should run away really quickly, preferably to somewhere that has a change of pants available." territory - kinda bypasses the cerebral cortex and just talks to the reflexes.  I can quite clearly recall starting to think about what I was doing, and at that time I was half turned around and two steps back already.

Pyrenees / Anatolian mix?  Dear Lord!  We've got an Anatolian - that mix could probably play *fetch* with a Peterbilt!
