She's a very smart woman, is not shy, and has good priorities. All 3 of those qualities served her well as a bartender I'd assume. They serve her well in Congress.

Exactly. Some years learning the processes of the House, learning how to build support within the House, and she'll be quite a leader.

I don't know, I'm not getting any sense that she has a dimmer switch in her.  Right now it's fine, Congress is basically the same as prison, you have to kick someone's ass as soon as you get in if you want to survive.  But once the novelty wears off she'll need to deal with the fact that some of her fans in Congress are not quite as ready to go all-in as she is, and the fact that she kicked some asses and is hot can only carry her so far.

If she isn't able to , she'll end up being basically a cheerleader with a vote.  All the Democrats will hear her firebranding and say, "Yeah, U GO GIRL, you tell 'em", meanwhile quietly cutting deals and making compromises to get key things done.

That's kind of her JOB right now.

She is a lightning rod. She is being used as such by the party. She is making Congress look good with younger voters, while simultaneously keeping the Right Wing Eye of Sauron firmly upon her, and bleeding them of page inches to try to diffuse her, before she and Kyrsten Sinema and even Tammy Duckworth inspire a whole new generation of women to run for the Democrats' tickets. Every article that is focused on HER, is less bile and misdirection that spills onto Pelosi or Schumer. She is performing that job, because folks BEGAN attacking her before she even got sworn in. And she's accepted that mantle with humor and poise, and forced those who keep attacking her to come out and emphatically and definitively declare their opposition to her.

She's doing her job right now. And that is a hefty sort of role for a freshman Rep, but she's doing it. Even enthused about it.

I saw the cropped shot first, and only today did I see the larger version, and at first, I thought that AOC had been photoshopped in because of how blurry and out of focus those boys are...which is perhaps a nice metaphor for them, although WHOSE staffers they are, I never actually caught.

She is such a f*cking badass, I almost can't stand it.
You keep going on with your bad self, AOC, we'll be cheering for ya.

Look at how she approaches this issue; the creativity she uses to pull back the curtain on the entire system. This is the real deal. A novel approach that's easy to understand and gives away the entire game, and she even manages to, rightfully, tie the president to all of it. This is super impressive for any freshman congressperson.

She (and the responder) are slightly incorrect in that there are constitutional restraints on which laws a congress can enact. They are also restrained by needing the concurrence of the other house, the President, the courts, and finally the voters themselves. "Checks and balances" if you will. It's not illegal for Congress to pass a law granting themselves a million dollar a year salary and all the liquor they can drink, but the Senate would have to agree and pass it without alteration, the President would have to sign it without veto, and the Courts would have to say that it did not go against the 27th Amendment. If all that passed, the voters themselves would have to consent to send them back to Congress in two years. Even if enacting such a pay raise would not be illegal per se, there are significant hurdles nevertheless. Not everything that is improper is illegal, nor do we want it to be.

She's either going to be SoH, President, or both one day.

(Obviously not at the same time).

I hope centrist Dems start to realize she's the future of the party. As Millennials start to take over, we're going to see a lot more of a push for socialist ideas. We're looking at what western Europeans have and comparing it to what we have and realizing we're getting the shaft just so the uber wealthy can stay that way.

Damn, just.. damn that's awesome.

It used to be that we could expect the traditions, gentlemenly agreements, and people vested in the government actually working to then take their cut off the top.

That is no longer the case. Trump and the GOP with him have shown how fragile our system of checks and balances actually is. They're operating under the assumption they will not lose control, so they have no compunction of being afraid of the Dems using the same destructive tactics against the GOP.

2019-02-08 03:22:08 AM
Jesus, that wasn't a farking bus she threw Trump and the Republicans (and some Democrats as well), it was a fleet of every bus on the planet.

2019-02-08 03:22:45 AM
Good. Now I can get on AOC bandwagon. Actions like this and others she's taken since she got elected are far more convincing to me than some loud Farkers being cultish.

2019-02-08 03:24:27 AM

Iczer: and some Democrats as well

And that's fine. Contrary to what people believe my stance on this is, I do believe that there are Dems who don't deserve to hold office and who need to be voted out.
