Is this like the old Chevy Nova translation to Spanish?

In English, "nova" refers, of course, to an astronomical event where a star brightens significantly for a time before returning to its original state.

Hilariously, in Spanish, "nova" refers to una estrella that brightens significantly for a time before returning to its original state.

Boy, those marketing guys must have shat themselves when they realized that was why no one who spoke Spanish ever bought one...

What's even funnier is that Chevrolet named one of their old models the Nova, which means "doesn't go" in Spanish.

At least if you have shiat, you know you've gone.

I mean, that was a joke, not a serious mistake people were actually making.

It was just an easyjoke where the setup came from the manufacturer's incompetence instead of the person doing the insulting being creative or having to put any effort in.  That's why Chevy's marketing department got mocked for it.

Well, that and that Chevy's marketing department, much like their engineering department, is just the WORST at farking everything all the time.  The No-va joke was only one of a dozen farking lay-ups those idiots seemed to be giving their detractors, these are the people who came up with "like a rock".  The central joke was essentially that the jokes write themselves because Chevy's ad department were all goateed villains from the nemesis universe that do their marketing backwards.

Naming something 'e-tron' is kind of lame to begin with - too obvious. However I think Audi can be forgiven for this (that's saying a lot for me as I dislike the brand generally): it's hard to name something that doesn't translate into an unintended phrase *somewhere* in the world.

That said, France is literally their neighbor. They probably have lots of francophones on staff there at Audi. You'd think they'd've done their homework better to avoid such a gaffe. *gallic shrug*

On the other hand... I had an ad pop up in my Facebook feed for a brand of trailrunning shoes called "kuru". Not having anything better to do at the time, I helpfully pointed out to them that a simple Google whack would have revealed that in most of the world (that is, everyone outside of Finland), kuru is a brain-eating prion disease spread by ritual cannibalism, similar to mad cow in cattle. At the time it was literally the first hit. It isn't now - they've bought the adword - but the disease entry is right below it. Not a good look.

Their snotty reply was that Kuru is a scenic place in Finland and that I ought to be more 'open minded'. I told them "Hey, that's super cool that you school your customers like that. I'll just keep buying Brooks Cascadia then." They deleted the post sometime later. If I'm bored again I'll check up on how their brain-eating shoes are selling.

A chap I knew worked for GEC Plessey Telecommunications and was allocated to a joint project with a French company. He used to get rather quizzical responses during the introduction part of meetings: "Firstname Surname, J'ai peté."
