cameroncrazy1984: Followed by storms Kayden and Layden

I get that they want to name these storms after common names. It just makes me ashamed of the fact that my generation is responsible for these names becoming common.

We do NOT need to anthropomorphize every goddamn cold front.

Luckily I'm in Metro Detroit, so the fact that my office's furnace has been out for the last two days means we've only had to suffer through single digit cold outside and an office temp just above 50 F. Tomorrow on the other hand...

Can someone please explain, which weather events are named?  Hurricanes, and what others?  What are the criteria for getting a storm named?

Well winter storm Jayden doesn't really have that threatening of a name, and apparently places are saying 'OVER 5 INCHES OF SNOW' which I find cute.
That said, some places are getting to be around -50 with wind chill, that's unpleasant, but luckily since it's windchill if you keep the wind off of your skin you'll be having to deal with the much more manageable -20 or wahtever the ambient is.

I think the midwest folks and yankees should be fine but it's supposed to go further south right? Could be a bunch of folks freezing. At least hypothermia is a peaceful way to go once the skin stops stinging. Hope they know how to stay warm though.

Well the winter ones just started getting named about 7 years ago. Because The Weather Channel felt like it.

Uh, dude, the song goes, ' a way down here they got a name, for rain and wind and fire. The rain is Tess. The fire's Jo. And they call the wind Mariah. ' So, although fire may not really be weather, yet, yer leavin' out Tess.

Laugh while you still can. Californians, being worthless and weak in temperatures beneath 60 degrees F, will be among the first that Midwesterners joyously offer as sacrifices to the Ice King when he returns to claim the throne that is his birthright.

It'll make the Aztec sacrifices look like a Disney Channel movie.

I think a place that can barely get enough water for people to drink should maybe not throw stones with regards to weather.

You midwesterners think you have problems. Here, anything above 2" and you have to shovel your sidewalk or get a fine, and the forecast is for 'up to 2"'. I could be royally screwed.

Someone gets in front of a TV camera and says the storm has a name.

At least with it being so cold the snow as fluffy. That is less anoying than the mushy salt infested disgusting mess that happens closer to 32 degrees.

Wr only had to shovel twice yesterday, and clean out the driveway at the street this morning. (Shakes fist at snowplow which invariablely rounds the corner and dumps everything right at my driveway)

We meaning my son and I. Yes. And yes, shovel. This wisconsinite with a corner lot does not own a snowblower anymore. It has become less of a necessity over the past two decades. It used to be a regular thing to use the snowblower because weekly slushy/packing snowy Now? Maybe a dusting every now and then mixed with maybe 2 or 3 heavy storms all winter.

/snowblower died about 5 years ago. Havent bothered replacing it.

I just heard all home offices are closed and they're suggesting people who work from home should shelter in place at the nearest bar and/or restaurant. Be safe out there, Farkers.

It's -29 F here in Winnipeg without the windchill. Why doesn't everything close down.

/ you American farkers probably don't know what a block heater is
// we have to plug are cars in in the winter to keep the engine oil from getting too cold

We know what they are, but if you look at the owner's manual for a lot of cars, they'll list that feature as "Only available in Canada", or, at least, that's what they used to say.

This is the type of snow I like.
