Representative James E. Clyburn, the No 3. Democrat, told reporters separately that Democrats could back a $5.7 billion funding measure that included drones and refitted ports of entry - but no wall.

Why do I feel we could have made a deal like this 30 days ago and saved so many people from financial hardship?

2019-01-23 06:38:32 PM
So they're going to give him the 94% of last year's DHS border security budget that his department failed to spend, due to incompetence and mismanagement at the top?

In other words, they completely caved like Expos on the way to the World Series, so they are not worth having.

I hope they at least got Trump's word that he would not kidnap any more children and hold them hostages to get what his dictatorial tyrannical ass thinks it needs in the way of padding.

That's now what it sounds like, actually.

HAHAHA

Tell yourself whatever helps you get through the night, man.

I think most everyone here is reading the real news. If it makes you feel better to think that not getting the wall is now winning, whatever the hell that means, then go for it.

The 1.3 billion allocated for border security last year was almost completely unutilized. Giving 5.7 billion for the same this year doesn't seem like a bad thing?

Disagree. They increased funding (which, if unspent or mismanaged will immediately be jumped on and broadcasted), and Trump doesn't get his personal Mt. Rushmore.

If Trump or McConnell rejects it, then everyone will know it's just about Trump having his ego monument and not about actual security.

That's not breaking.

That's putting something on the table so they can say they are all for border security. And they are offering deaks.

Just not the one deal Trump cannot personally accept - Not a penny for his Ego Wall.

This is all about the shutdown optics. Because shutdowns are all about who gets the blame and nothing about the outcome.

And if DHS didn't spend last yr's full appropriation, they likely would not spend this extra one either.

As long as it comes with the caveat that centrist Dems stop asking liberals how do we pay for modern-day social services that every other developed nation has had for decades. If they're willing to throw away billions to bullshiat without question then they can invest billions towards programs that have a high ROI.

Everyone will be watching how it's spent and will question why any of it was unspent. This is long game politics and will be used against the GOP in 2020 should any shenanigans occur.

And Trump still doesn't get his wall.

I've thought for a couple days now they should give him money, even for the wall.  And then hammer the hell out of him about putting the country in danger and short-funding TSA, FBI etc.

However with this, them saying NO WALL but here's a bunch of money.  Once he got the funds, could he do whatever he wanted with it?

Whatever happens, as soon as possible they need to subpoena his tax returns and every goddamn thing he and his family have ever touched.

No, I'm sure Congress is going to control the disbursement of those funds as is customary via the Consitution.  Letting Trump have taxpayer money?  That's a really bad idea.

I think I've seen him claim (so, not worth a thing on its own) that they used some of the previous money for buying land for the wall, so I hope that the possibility of doing more of that is explicitly excluded as well

Agreed. It takes away the stupid farking "open border" bullshiat that he's been babbling about. And there's already at least one Republican who will have no problem voting for it, since he's been talking about it lately on whatever news outlet will have him, including NPR. So I assume President Sniveling Asshole will reject it. Because he's a sniveling asshole.

Well, sir, there's nothing on earth
Like a genuine, bona fide
Electrified, six-car Smartwall

What'd I say?
Smartwall
What's it called?
Smartwall

That's right! Smartwall
Smartwall
Smartwall
Smartwall

I hear those things are awfully loud
It glides as softly as a cloud
Is there a chance the wall could bend?
Not on your life, my Hindu friend

What about us brain-dead slobs?
You'll be given cushy jobs
Were you sent here by the Devil?
No, good sir, I'm on the level

The ring came off my pudding can
Take my pen knife, my good man
I swear it's America's only choice
Throw up your hands and raise your voice

Smartwall
What's it called?
Smartwall
Once again
Smartwall

But Main Street's still all cracked and broken
Sorry, Mom, the mob has spoken

Smartwall!
Smartwall!
Smartwall!
Smartwall!

Smar - d'oh!

Only if you feel like McConnell will override the inevitable presidential veto.  He's shown zero scrote to do so thus far.

Man, people are not reading the article or even the subby well. Welcome to Fark I guess.

Democrats weren't fighting for no border security money, they were fighting for no wall money.

Give him the money with the caveat that none is spent on the wall, watch McConnell squirm and Trump rage. And who knows, the two bills coming up might make this moot.

I said this the other day, in a slightly different form. You can get everything wanted for SECURITY without spending one dime on a WALL. So why do we need a wall?

I myself would not be averse to increasing border security, for all kinds of reasons. So it's not that bad a deal: call that orange jackhole's bluff. Is this about border security, or just a stupid wall?

Oh good, another "Democrats cave" headline. We've had like eleventeen of those so far which people jumped into to say "see!" and "I knew it!". And here we are with no wall, with no money proposed for a wall, with a bill to reopen the government, while Trump's popularity keeps tanking.

Those eleventeen headlines have turned out to be quite wrong. As is this one.

It's been so long now, I had to go to Aljazeera to review a timeline.
On Dec 20th the House voted for $5 billion in wall funding to be included with funding for the government.
On Dec 22nd the Senate was unable to pass the bill because they couldn't get 60 votes.
We've been shutdown ever since.

That was the situation 30 days ago.

because you are smoking some good medicine to imagine Trump would have agreed to anything but skeletor's dumbass wall

Lol.

How is that breaking?

Seems pretty smart to me. Now, if Trump & gang reject it, it looks like they don't give a flying fark about border security.

The whole debate has been over a stupid farking wall that accomplishes jack shiat and is just a vanity project for Trump's tiny dick.

Trump *needs* his wall, and the whole "border security" talking point he uses gets flushed down the toilet if they don't allow it. As well as piss off any other GOP who are on the fence.

So let them own that they don't care about border security, and just want a wall. If it passes, still no wall. Sounds good to me.

No. They are letting him paint himself into a corner.

If he accepts, his base turns on him.
If he refuses, Dem's pile even more blame for the shutdown on him.

Trump isn't going to accept this offer. The Senate might. But he will veto it. I don't know if republicans would have enough votes to override it. Or if they would even pass it. I haven't heard of any whip count yet.

This offer by Pelosi is genius.

FARKS' SAKE, THIS.

I am sick and farking tired of hearing "oh... but that's soooo expensive!" or "ooooh... but how will we _pay_ for it??" from disingenuous, selfish, racist, ignorant, hate-filled, dimwitted, willfully misled or -misleading, other-hating douchecanoes.  Of any stripe.

But, of course, if the Dems give $6B to buy support from and/or placate foot-stomping, other-hating, and brown-fearing pants-wetters, if we're *LUCKY*, President Harris will start by asking for $1B to help with student debt, or health insurance, or job training, or _actual_ infrastructure (and flat out forget science or research or art, cuz that ain't never gonna happen) and we'll be right back to "FARK NO FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY!!" shiatheadery from the t(R)aito(R)ous asshole pa(R)ty.
