This isn't new. And it's the kind of thing you can accept that people from the 40s believed. You don't have to like it, but you have to accept the world was the way it was.

To stick with that attitude though. Nuts to that

I was pretty certain a woman made that discovery, and I'm not clicking on any CNN links for scientific or historical citations to tell me otherwise.

What he said in and of itself isn't a racist statement. It is a testable opinion. What if its true? We can't squash science because it makes people uncomfortable or it isn't what they want to believe. There are studies that do point ot it maybe being true. Maybe it isn't, he has the right to say what he thinks. Knee jerk nuts ruin science.

Watson co-discovered the structure of the DNA double helix. DNA was discovered in the 1860s and was determined to be the molecule of heredity in the 1940s.

Correct! And his hypotheses have already been long falsified, meaning Watson is an old bigot (and his defenders are, too).

Rosalind Franklin was female and Jewish, that made stealing the credit from her both sexist and racist.
If she had been lesbian and disabled he would have scored a Nazi full house.

I think there's some significant Venn Diagram (Set) overlap between being a dick and being a racist ( well over 50%, IMHO)

How some people think because one person is a genius on a topic, it must be that they are smart about any topics

He also advocated for sterilizing people whose IQs were below average as well.

And he was a massive prick with pretty much everyone. His family and friends kept away from him and employees hated him (some quit to form rival companies) for his dictatorial ways. He wanted credit for everything, even if he did nothing at all on the project.

Yes but enough about Steve Jobs.

Ok, maybe not the sterilizing part

Saying that X minority is inherently inferior is like saying licorice jellybeans are inherently stale.  Yes, perhaps from your own experiences, all licorice jellybeans tend to be stale, but coincidentally, they also happen to be the ones you are always picking around in favor of other flavors until they're the only thing left in the jar.  And then you try to argue that that's not a factor by taking one of the stale licorice jellybeans from the bottom of your old jar, putting it at the top of a new jar, and then pointing out that it's still stale and therefore its position in the jar can't be a factor.

2019-01-13 04:50:36 PM
There was a Watson documentary on a week back; dude straight up called blacks inferior and went on about his oldest son who had some mental issues.  There was a lot about Rosalind Franklin, as she was a hard nosed expert who had no tolerance of the shiat from the men she worked with. No one else was able to process the x-ray data like she could. Watson, Crick and the other male scientists from the lab were absolute dicks to her, even after she died.

I doubt that one single person with no input from others understood DNA for the first time.  That takes effort and is like saying Oppenheimer is the only one responsible for the atomic bomb.

This.

I have listened to Bill Bryson's, A Short History of Nearly Everything a couple hundred times.  Whenever it gets to the part about Franklin it makes me angry.  Those dudes treated her like such shiat.  Then stole her work.  And then they won a Nobel prize while she died in her 30's, still not getting full credit.

Fark those guys.

Watson and Crick have been known to have been absolute bastards for decades. Glad to see Rosalind Franklin has been covered. The sooner he drops dead, the better off we'll all be.

CSB time:

I have met Watson and Crick on a few occasions. Watson is arrogant and condescending. I was present when he was asked  about Franklin's contribution to his work, and he said there was no controversy as he would've figured out the structure of DNA eventually without her data, which may be true, but still diminishes the fact that she did help. Crick, on the other hand, is much more personable. I was a lowly lab tech at the Salk Institute and was one day copying papers for my boss in the common photocopier room. Crick wanders in to do some copying and engaged me in a long conversation about the science projects I was involved in and my future career plans. It was totally exhilarating to have the positive attention of one of history's most notable figures.

So what you're saying is:  After a certain age, men (and maybe women) become dumber.
Or is it that: After a certain age, men (and maybe women) are incapable of learning.

Saw him speak at the dedication of a genetics center when I was in HS (about 25 yrs ago). He spent most of his talk on the eugenics movement. It was... surreal.
