I thought it was going to be 50 movies/TV shows where they sang a cover/karoake of Africa. And I thought "wow, I had no idea that song was represented in so much media."

And I thought the video was going to be them singing it all at once. Sounding like the Toto Borg collective.

But not fantastic editing skills. TFA had enormous pauses between most of the cuts. This is how you do it right:

This is exactly what I thought it would be too.  There are enough covers of it on youtube that something like this could be done.  Getting the speed of all the different versions to sync up would be fiddly but not impossible.

I loved this song when it was new. I have no idea why as I'm not a big Toto fan, but I've never gotten tired of it.
I'm very happy for this resurgence. I hope it passes soon for those who don't like it.

Let's see what the dean of rock critics

Toto IV [Columbia, 1982] B-
Consumer Guide Reviews:
Wish I could claim this millionaire Grammy-rock was totally pleasureless, but professionalism is rarely that neat. The fattest of all studio bands is almost as hooky as Shoes or the Ramones, and their production excesses at times betray verve, delight, even (though I must be mistaken) a sense of humor. But the lyrics are utterly forgettable, and the tone and spirit have nothing to do with rock and roll--unlike Thom Bell, to whom they've been rapturously compared in Billboard, they don't know the difference between slick and smooth, between hedonism and conspicuous consumption. At least Michael McDonald learned his shiat from the real thing; Bobby Kimball and Steve Lukather learned theirs from McDonald. Still, for a band that crosses Chicago, Asia, and the Doobie Brothers, they have their glitzy moments
.

Of course, today we can be grownups and enjoy the song unironically.

It is a fantastic bad song. Cheesy, sure. But it's such a great listen.

In a previous Toto's Africa thread, someone posted a link to a choir performing the song, where they mimic rain with snapping fingers. It's surprising awesome.
There's a heavy metal version that's cool, too.

It does have perhaps the most awkward line ever in a pop song: "As sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti..."  You really have to break the rhythmic flow of the song to get that out.

Came in to say the same thing. And not only is the cadence wrong, it sure as hell doesn't "rise like Olympus". At twice the height and prominence, it rises like Kilimanfarkingjaro and makes Olympus look like a foothill.

As a kid I thought it said "I've got some range down in Africa," and that it was some sort of a breakup song saying he was going to hang out on his zebra ranch and think about stuff.
