I hated Friends before it was cool to hate Friends.

/It was too white, too boring and too privileged even for the 90s, imo
//And that's coming from a boring, privileged white guy

It was garbage TV when it was first on, so I can't imagine time has been kind.

If you watch Friends as if it is set now, then yes the politics are wrong.  But it was very progressive for the 1990s.

Even the "Chandler is gay" jokes were progressive, because they were always played with a understanding that it was stupid to connect sexual orientation and hobbies, habits, interests, etc.  Also, Chandler's anxiety over being perceived as gay was obviously part of Chandler's generalized anxiety, and as later episodes revealed was rooted in his own anxiety over being the child of a gay parent.  To even address those kinds of issues was groundbreaking for the time.

Also, the issue with Chandler's dad were about Chandler, not a commentary on anything.  Chandler's dad's transgenderism (and his parent's divorce, which was tied up with the first) caused Chandler to have all kinds of issues, which he dealt with badly (because Chandler is a neurotic).  The show never endorsed Chandler's view -- the episode that they show a clip from is all about how Chandler's internalized homophobia and shame about his father was incredibly hurtful to his father.  That whole episode is about how Chandler has been hurting his father for years by rejecting him, and resolves itself when Chandler finally realizes that he's the cause of their estrangement, not his father's status.

As for Fat Monica, the whole point of that is to show that Monica's current figure comes at the cost of tons of neurosis and a deep unhappiness that she didn't have when she wasn't self-conscious about her weight.  It was deeply subversive, and far more effective than most of the screeching you hear on the topic.

Friends is one of the most overrated shows ever. It's a toss-up between that and Seinfeld.

Never been a fan. I tried to go back and watch it to give it another chance when it first came to Netflix and didn't make it halfway through the first season before I gave up.

2019-01-13 04:10:30 AM
Never liked it.. I found even a few seconds of dialogue, overheard from the next room, to be cringeworthy.

Oddly, I kinda liked Coupling(UK).

grumpfuff: Friends is one of the most overrated shows ever. It's a toss-up between that and Seinfeld.

At least watching Friends didn't make me want to cringe myself through my couch.  They had a behind the scenes thing about Seinfeld that was ten times more enjoyable than the show itself. Funnier, too.

I watched maybe a dozen episodes? The constant schtick bores me to distraction, nobody is on like that all the time. But I'd quickly get roped back in because the brown haired hot one never wore a bra. When will they be analyzing that gimmick? Clearly it's a Fark favorite...

Better get the Red Cross to set up a nationwide system of safe spaces well stocked with fainting couches.
When all the millennials of Generation SnowFlake see this article they'll all be triggered into PTSD from the horrors this show inflicted on them.
And they've seen every episode so many times.
It's not like they could turn the channel, so they have to make sure everyone hates it before they boycott to make sure it's never available again.

I was gonna make a joke about how I'd hit Fat Monica, but then I RTFA, because I've never watched Friends, and was glad I didn't because Chris Hanson has been sighted in the area. So..yeah.

Rewatching sh*t on Netflix is a really odd phenom. You've seen it you're only half-watching it at best, and yet it remains entertaining. You laugh in anticipation of the gag. You realize scenes didn't go down like you thought.

2019-01-13 04:51:07 AM
It first aired when I was too young and my family was falling apart so I resented their smug beautifull rich white dramas. When it came round the second time I genuinely enjoyed it and actually shed a happy tear at phoebe's wedding to Mike.  And joey was allways gorgeous.
But now.... it's on comedy central all day every day and..  are there not other morerecentcomedy shows around?

I don't care about Friends one way or another, but I don't get the "it would never get made today" framing of these arguments. Way more offensive* stuff gets made all the time today, and I can find it with a few clicks of my mouse or TV remote whenever I want. The endless back and forth between "We're just better now!" and "No, we're just over-sensitive snowflakes now!" seems to me to be a ridiculous false dichotomy.

Can easily be argued Joey is a type of sexual predator and in a few states could be charged with rape because he lies to women to get them into bed, giving them false names (Ken Adams) and jobs.

I think the fact they didn't have a gay actor playing Chandler was cultural appropriation.

I really hate these articles. "Look at how horrifyingly offensive the people who made this show were 20 years ago!" Because it wasn't just the show, it was all of us who had similar attitudes back then. We've come a long way since then.

Also, the fact that it was never explicitly said that Rachel was Jewish on the show is just silly to complain about. It was hinted at and, what did they expect? a more stereotypical character? If anything the fact that she wasn't a stereotype and her being Jewish wasn't at the forefront of her character was probably more progressive.
