What are the odds that these are some off duty cops moonlighting as bail enforcement?

There's no other explanation for the blunt refusal of the police to investigate an armed kidnapping.

Surely they can be sued?

If the cops won't do anything about it (and that is complete bullshiat), then the victim should be able to sue each one of these jackasses to hell and back.

You don't need a SYG law to defend your house against armed invaders. In my state, "Home Invasion" is one of the most serious crimes short of murder that you can commit. Anyone kicking a door down in this fashion should be met with 45 slugs as a response.

Living in Illinois we just don't have this problem. That's because it's one of only four states that have outlawed commercial bail bonds.

I thought a "shenanigan" involved some sort of deception. If they tell you to "get bent," and they mean it, is it still a shenanigan?

Bounty hunters have even more legal protections to terrorize people than real cops, and real cops can strangle unarmed black men to death in public on multiple cameras without facing any legal repercussions.

It's an insane system.

thehobbes: Marcus Aurelius: Clearly we need tort reform.

Bail bonds are insurance policies actually.  The bonding agency, the bondsmen, and the managing agent are all insured as well as having a state license and surety bond.
This man needs to get some travel brochures in anticipation of his forthcoming check.
An administrative complaint with the state insurance regulator will result in discipline or revocation of their licenses as well.
Criminal charges are not the only remedy and in this instance perhaps not the most appropriate or effective solution to this dilemma.  A nice big check seems like a better solution.

0 chance
Cops are forbidden to pursue that vocation as there is a thought that they might refer arrestees to the bail bonding agency for which they work.

Most other advanced countries went through their lawless/anarchic eras 1000 years ago (or longer). America went through it about 1-300 years ago, and we haven't taken all the make-do laws off the books for it yet, like those laws that say every able bodied man must bring his gun to church to repel Indian attacks (or more importantly, the matching mentality).

I don't really think this is a good explanation for it, I think a better, simpler explanation is we have an infestation of power-fantasy gun humpers that took Zardoz's commandment (The gun is good!) literally.

We are a country full of grown men who still play dress-up. I think most of the people who love their guns and love to carry them are pretty much impotent in everyday life. Most have mundane jobs where they aren't in charge of anything and most don't get much respect from family or friends. So, they strap on a gun and do their quick draw practice in front of their bathroom mirror. They feel tough and fantasize about being James Bond or some other fictional hero.

It kind of reminds me of the Harley riders. They are, for the most part, regular people who put on their Harley costumes and ride their motorcycles around a half dozen times a year. At least they are mainly harmless and just having some fun.

I saw a guy in my local Walmart a couple of months ago who was open carrying. He was obese, probably close to 400 pounds, dirty and unkempt. As I watched him, it was clear there would be no way he could get to that gun quickly. The rolls of fat would have prevented it. But I guess he felt like he was something special.

To start a firefight when he's outnumbered by a bunch of geared-up wannabe Tactical Douchenozzles making entry, while his family is in the house? A lot of ways that probably would've worked out worse.

Yeah...that's kind of not where my mind went.  Mainly because action movies aren't real life and the actual situation was so f*cked up, that I couldn't even conceive of compounding upon it, as you did.
