Good for her, it's time to drag the needle back left a bit.

We've seen Obama, Warren, and lots of prominent members of the left referred to as "the most communist socialist leftist lefty to ever be on the left" so why not have some actual left leaning policies for once. If we're going to take the accusation anyways start actually putting up the ideas.

It feels like people these days elect conservatives such as Trump while convincing himself they won't do many of the things they say they will, while others are skeptical of left leaning candidates such as Bernie because they worry they'll do everything they want to do.

They say all this like its a bad thing.

The beauty is they've made the term 'socialism' meaningless. If we're lucky enough to escape hell dimension (we won't be) we can start pursuing real policies

I'm hoping that she learns the power of not rising to the bait as often. But I'm willing to give her some time to get there. Unfortunately many of her biggest supporters are going to encouraging her every time she rises to burn some critic, but it's short term joy. Her biggest supporters likely won't learn. I hope she's smarter.

Letting your opponents set the terms and terminology and narrative for yourselves is just never a losing strategy Democrats. Keep up the good work...

This Democrat is not concerned.

Drag the government a bit left instead of the rest of the way right towards fascism

Perhaps a third party?

Good for AOC.  Nancy likes her, so the establishment butt heads can go suck on one.

Impeach the m*therf*cker.

And by impeach I mean give her a committee chair.

She was elected specifically because of this.  It is her job to represent her constituents, not toe the Dem line.  Sit down and shut up, Dems.  Unless you want to fall in line with her.  That would be good.

2019-01-11 09:06:45 AM
She makes Republicans AND establishment Democrats queasy, and it's HILARIOUS!

Aren't you just saying you wish she'd be more like establishment democrats? Something else could happen too you know, critics could stop focusing on dancing and her fancy TJ Maxx clothing and nude photos of women who aren't her but who have brown skin so they're basically the same person. Being passive hasn't helped women in public office avoid that scrutiny in the past so why should they take your advice to keep doing what's not working?

2019-01-11 09:09:19 AM
"Exasperated"? Really? Just let her do her own thing. She's not going to turn the country socialist all by herself. Why does it matter if she's enthusiastic about it? You know you don't have to do everything she wants to do, right?

Yeah. She's totally going to bring down the level of discourse in Washington today.

No kidding, haven't you Americans figured out that by continuing down the same old path with the same old washed up politicians is not going to change anything.
You will continue to lose what little international standing you have and continue your descent into being a shiathole country with no friends and no money.
Your new Russian overlords will be happy though.
But keep going with what makes you comfortable, Sanders, Pelosi, etc. are dinosaurs in a new world.

"Two House Democratic sources compared her use of Twitter to Donald Trump's. Just as congressional Republicans constantly withhold criticism of the president out of fear he'll unleash a tweet at them, some Democrats have done the same with Ocasio-Cortez."

I imagine that's precisely the kind of comparison she wants her own party making about her after one week on the job.

2019-01-11 09:12:04 AM
Shouldn't she or any other Freshman law maker in the House keep a lower profile?

I mean she can't do anything with out the support of like 300 other people first.

She is interviewing and tweeting like she is a President. Her constituents are like .005% of the country.

"Over the last 30 odd years, Democrats have moved to the right and the right has moved into a mental hospital. So what we have is one perfectly good party for hedge fund managers, credit card companies, banks, defense contractors, big agriculture and the pharmaceutical lobby... That's the Democrats. And they sit across the aisle from a small group of religious lunatics, flat-earthers and civil war re-enactors who mostly communicate by AM radio and call themselves the Republicans and who actually worry that Obama is a socialist. Socialist? He's not even a liberal." - Bill Maher

I see exactly one comment in this thread that you could really stretch to interpret that way, and that comment already has three angry rebuttals. Calm down spazz.

If the Democrats were smart (which we know they aren't), they'd realize that this is the future of left-wing politics. This is where the party is headed. AOC might be pushing it there faster than expected, but young people in this country aren't frightened of the things she's saying and she makes a lot of sense to them. I think a big reason Hillary failed so miserably is that she failed to recognize the support Bernie had was because of his ideas connecting to young people. I expected her to incorporate some of his platforms into hers, but she never did and simply insisted that being Republican Lite was enough.

It isn't. "The lesser of two evils" is not viable anymore. Bigger, better ideas that change things in big ways are what we need; if we have to kick the status-quo to the curb, well, that's probably OK.

It kind of is when getting any dem policies passed will move things to the left and she's waving her arms about how she won't have any of it if it's not progressive enough. While republican shiatballs own the government and are busy looting and pillaging the nation, showing off how progressive you are by farking with your own party instead of the totalitarian assholes on the right is poor timing at best.

Brett Kavanaugh's teeth: She was elected specifically because of this.  It is her job to represent her constituents, not toe the Dem line.  Sit down and shut up, Dems.  Unless you want to fall in line with her.  That would be good.

That's the excuse that many gave about why Trump was elected, was it not?  Is she the left's version of Donald?  More concerned about what Twitter thinks of them than getting work done & towing the party line?

I'm thinking mostly this:

Matt Yglesias:The sentiments expressed here are widespread on the Hill and not even really all that ideological ... it's like 80% petty jealousy that she's a star and they are not.

With a little bit of this:

Dave Weigel:One important factor, not mentioned here (and not relevant to House Dems), is that there's nothing Dems can do about conservative media transforming into a live 24/47[sic] AOC reaction channel.

She's the most likable person they have.  Her policies are a joke, but I'd rather listen to her talk than the various creaky old white people.

The argument that she's a political novice holds ZERO weight anymore.  Much more "experienced" people have been bamboozled by the likes of the Tea Party and the Trump administration.  The supposed expertise that she lacks has been demonstrated to be of questionable value.

No. If I were trying to say that I would have used those words. Don't project so much. I'm saying that the celebrity aspect of being this lightning rod will ultimately be a disservice to her accomplishing her agenda. I happen to like 90+% of her agenda. To me the question is about enacting the parts she can, not about being the face of it. If she wants, she could just be the face of things that are very popular with progressives but that don't get done. And progressives can all cheer about the fact that they can point to somebody who thinks like they do and talks about the things they want to happen. Progressives have a great pent up desire to have such a vocal champion. But historically, it's been easier to actually get things done when you're more low-key. She'll find it easier to build consensus out of the public eye. And I want her to be effective.

So you've got some good examples of her blocking the Democrat's policy from being passed?

Heck, got any examples of her opposing a policy of the Democrats?

The whole "don't attack your own party" mentality is a major reason why the GOP is stuck with Trump.

People will call you a concern troll, but you're mostly right. Years ago I worked on a public affairs talk show in a US territory. We had on a territory-level Congressman who was on his second term or so. He said thst when he was first elected, he came in as a firebrand who wanted to singlehandedly shake things up and change everything. After he had been there a while, he realized how much it actually was about coalition-building and compromise.

Today's Democratic Party is about where Reagan was on the ideological spectrum, so it make sense that they'd adopt the Reagan Rule.

But, really, the right has already latched onto her as the new Obama. She could be as milquetoast as humanly possible and we'd be seeing Mustard-gate level articles from the usual suspects.
