There's a lot of junk underground in cities.  Sewer, electrical, fresh water, gas, telecom, fire hydrant pipes, basements, etc. etc.

He's building a novelty / perk for millionaires.  Because the per-car charge will have to be insanely high due to the limitations on how many vehicles can actually fit in the tube.  There are 4 million vehicles on the roads daily in LA.  Almost all of them will never be able to go into his little tubes.

Which raises the question of why the hell should the city/county/state give him waivers for this experiment?  It is NOT in the public's interest and it serves no beneficial purpose.  Make him line up and wait just like everyone else because this is a pointless and stupid waste of time and resources.

It is a prototype and an early one at that so there are some problems with the loop.  Also given the short duration of the test tunnel I doubt you want to get up to the operating speed of 150mph as the acceleration or deceleration would be excessive in that short time.  Still, it is impressive that they got something up and running so fast and hopefully developments and improvements will continue.

You know all those cars that claim to generate enough downforce that they could theoretically drive upside down at speed. Electric versions of those could use the top of the tunnel as an express lane.

It isn't all that impressive, even as a proof of concept.
The car has to be fitted with training wheels, to keep the wheels aligned with the tunnel (rather than use more appropriate self-steering).
The tunnel is only as wide as a single vehicle, which is fine for a subway train, but not for a car; lousy throughput.
If it's accessible only through an elevator, one car at a time, the throughput becomes even worse.
Subways have already been invented, and they make a much better job of moving people about than this thing.

While I don't disagree that it's excessive, I had the privilege of riding in a Tesla a couple of days ago, and the driver used Ludicrous Speed to get to 100mph in less than 4 seconds.

I'll never get my flying car, but for those brief seconds, I finally got the sense that I am, indeed, living in 2018.

Yea, I thought instead of training wheels it would use sleds as a universal adapter.  Automated systems should build in some added capacity and will be necessary with higher speed runs to effect merging in the system.  As far as needs and efficiency, if you have ever been stuck on the 10, the 405, the 110, the 101, the 5 or any other of the freeways during the commuter hours of midnight to midnight, the gain by bypassing these routes to major destinations still has significant appeal.  This is still a work in progress and hopefully things are refined a little.

it can also look like building a useless submarine... thing and then calling a hero a pedophile because he correctly called musk out for being an ass. and thus far the ration of boondoggle to success is firmly in boondoggle territory (which could admittedly flip if tesla ever makes any money)

They are built segmented, sort of like those toy snakes that you hold and they wiggle. The tunnels are designed to move with the earthquake

If he doesn't have proper air filtration than it can only take electric vehicles. I don't see why Musk would go through the trouble of accommodating nonelectric vehicles

Exactly.  After all, dozens of people have already accomplished this simple engineering feat.

Now, throwing keyboard warrior shade, that takes real genius and big balls.

You've misunderstood what it means to move with the Earthquake. Wiggling motion only occurs at the surface, and surface structures can take a lot of damage from that primarily because they only contact the ground in one place. Underground, the entire tunnel is in contact with the surrounding earth, and the entire tunnel moves more or less as one monolithic piece. Most of the wave energy will simply wash over the tunnel. Remember that LA already has a subway system, and there are plenty of other Earthquake-prone places (like Tokyo) that have far more extensive systems than LA. An underground tunnel is actually one of the safer places to be in a large Earthquake.

I just watched a segment on some morning talk show where one of them went with Elon on a test drive. According to Elon during previous earthquakes around the world subway tunnels are the safest place.
