(Daily Mail)   Utah hasn't had a rabies death since 1944. That is, until this man who let bats fly around his home freely learned a very valuable lesson   ( dailymail.co.uk) divider line

That's a rough way to go. I'd like to criticize the ER staff for not catching it, but something tells me he declined to mention he plays with wild bats.

fake news. in other words there is no such thing as "rabies" or related virus. It's interesting con by evil doctors. So even if some man died it doesn't mean man died from rabies. Hydrophobia the "red flag" symptom usually attributed advanced stages of rabies patients is nothing more and nothing less than psychiatric symptom, but that is another story. All healthy cats exhibit all kinds "hydrophobia".

Gubbo: Rabies seems a pretty unpleasant way to go

Hydrophobia does not look fun.  To be perpetually thirsty yet irrationally afraid of quenching it until your brain melts and you die.

Well, at least he didn't die of autism due to thimersol exposure, which is nice.

Perhaps the bats were rabid GOP'ers.

So... I should get my rabies shot? I deal with all sorts of characters at the pharmacy, and wouldn't be too surprised if I got bit by a rabid one.

Why would they wake up to bats in their bed? Did they sleep in a barn or not have screens on their windows?

The CDC recommends immediately undergoing rabies treatment if you're bit by a rabid animal, rather than waiting for symptoms to show up, which may take days, months, or even up to one year.

Ugh...they bury it later but it's very much worth knowing rabiesnis functionally 100% fatal.

It takes so long to become symptomatic because instead of entering the blood stream, the rabies virus crawls along your nerve until it reaches the brain.  Victims can actually feel it happening.

It's this.period where you can be saved.  Once it reaches your brain and you get symptoms, it's a death sentence

Had to send a stray cat in to the state for rabies testing this week. The neighborhood had been taking care of the cat and finally caught him so we could vaccinate and neuter him. He was not very healthy looking and started having seizures in the hospital and ended up passing away. Neuro signs with sudden death and no vaccines is suspicious as heck!!  I'm vaccinated against rabies, but obviously no one else involved is. Hoping the cat doesn't come back positive, because lots of people will have to go through preventative immunotherapy. Rabies is out there, and it's scary!!

Bats are small, and most older houses have cracks or crevices where they can climb from the attic into the living areas.

CSB: My BIL and his family had bats in their last house.  It was a pain for them to get the attic properly sealed (not allowed to just kill them, there needs to basically be one-way doors so the bats can get out but not back in) and the rabies vaccine was not fun.  It still beat the risk of getting rabies by a long shot, though.

I'm still a bit puzzled that some people haven't absorbed the basic lesson with wild animals.  Admire then, hate them, make stupid memes with them - whatever works for you - but do it from a gd distance.  Cuddling up is rarely going to improve your health.

There is an absolutely fascinating story done by Radio Lab that touches on rabies

Sure, why not put this in the politics tab?  While you're at it, link to a tweet that links to TFA, instead of just linking directly to the article.

Yeah. I noticed the article made it sound like you have a chance if not a small one. 1 fluke survival out of all known cases IMHO doesn't count. You get rabies, you are dead.

Rabies is a bad way to go out. The worst thing is that it's something that you don't have to die from if you catch it in time, but if you're too late there's not a damn thing they can do and you'll die steeped in madness.

If any critter bites you and you don't KNOW it's rabies-free, you should get yourself checked out, because if you miss that window of opportunity and it does carry rabies, you will die.

I think it technically exists, the way "nothing" exists as a concept. The 80mph speed limit isn't high enough to get through all that nothingness.

The whole thing is an allegory. You see, the party that runs Utah is bat shiat insaine, and they're gonna bite us like the bat bit the man.

Well, if you develop the symptoms you will die.  Rabies is adapted differently depending on species, and the starting amount of virus may be small, an exposed person or animal often does not develop the disease, but fights off the virus and becomes immune. A dog exposed to a fox strain will very likely develop the disease and exposed to a skunk type probably will not. So remedies like "the hair of the dog that bit you" often "worked", and Pasteur found out rabies repeatedly put through rabbits was a vaccine.

My kids, actually any anyone in my vicinity has been warned: if you are bitten by ANY outdoor creature you go directly to the hospital. DO NOT WAIT for symptoms to show up, once that happens its over, nothing will help you.
