Personally I like the scooters. I kinda wish they could put some up in the suburbs where I live.

They're for transportation in the city, not so much for recreation.
You can get one for a couple/few hundred bucks.

Maybe with that kind of money behind it, they'll be able to provide the needed organizing/charging infrastructure that Bird, etc. don't.

Please, come take them from the suburb that I live in. Seriously. Damn things are sitting in disorganized piles on street corners at every intersection with a light, half seemingly with status LEDs blinking indicating errors.

Rental devices like this don't work well unless there are facilities for them to be picked up from and dropped off at, basically the equivalent of parking spaces for cars. Part of the problem is that there's no penalty for leaving them strewn about. Another problem is even if someone leaves one parked responsibly, it's light weight and easily moved by others.

I'm waiting for the first youtube video on how to rapidly disassemble them and make your own powerwall out of the parts.

Part of the point of these things is to leave them in piles near large apartment buildings, dorm rooms, etc., so people can use them to go to class or work and then not care about locking them up or maintaining them.  I think they have GPSes in them so you can use the app to find the one nearest you.  I should download the app and mess around with it, even though I have a car and therefore don't really have a use for one.

Yes, weirdly enough, they are scattered around Riverside, CA.  We normally don't get these sorts of fads this early.  Apparently the city hasn't given the company any grief yet, although they are in theory banned on the UCR campus, the students of which would be the prime market for them.

Personally, I think they are kind of cool, as long nobody blocks the sidewalk with them or leaves them in the middle of the street or something.

I've seen articles on how the homeless are salvaging them to motorize their shopping carts.

In Indianapolis, those scooters are everywhere. I've been told by some friends that local news covers the occasional "how the f*** did you get it THERE" story, like in the canal. Or driven to the speedway and thrown over the fence. Or on the roof of a 15 floor building.

I laughed at the tools riding the skooters. Then I tried one. Those things are fun.
