Saw a county work crew a few years ago. First worker dug a hole. Next worker watered the hole. Last worker backfilled the hole. After watching this process a few times, I asked the question. Seems the worker who plants the tree was on vacation.

Those trees are small. If you have a off road capable vehicle with a solid bumper there's no need to swerve.

I read a story from the USA a few years ago. The city put in a less pretty obstacle course. Drivers started crashing. City engineer said that means it's working -- if you speed you crash.

No, that's a road built around a tree. Notably different.

I don't see anything wrong with that tree. It's clearly in an island engineered for cars to drive around. It is not in the middle of a lane where a car would normally drive. To hit your posted tree you would have to drive up the curb first.

One of my favorite bad Saturday morning cartoons.  Every once in a while you'd get a '60's-'70's era one like this, where they were hellbent on subverting just about every genre trope they could get their hands on.

Granted it looks stupid.

That said, I live on a 'quiet residential street' and when people start driving like morons around my house I park my cars strategically and it slows people down and shoos away the people who don't live there.  The people at the entrance to the neighborhood do it as well.

It is certainly less annoying than speed bumps.

A regular back-and-forth at city traffic committee meetings was a resident request to ban street parking and the city engineer's reply that they were asking to eliminate a traffic calming measure.

What they really wanted was a gated community.

Hmm ... replacing the suspension every few years vs. replacing the brakes and possibly the entire front end.

You're right!

That would never work in my neighborhood (north of Boston), unless your goal is to have your car rammed and left on the side of the road

The trick isn't the tree. It's the 137 deadly things living in the tree that get into your car if you hit the tree. That's the real deterrent.

2018-11-09 09:26:02 AM
1) Wait 10 years for them to grow.
2) Repave the road every time the roots crack it up
3) Profit??

Or

1) Wait 10 years for them to grow.
2) Run your car into one of the trees and sue.
3) Profit???

Hoopy Frood

We get poles in the middle of the street when a road is widened and utilities are late to move their poles. They don't like to move poles because it costs money and doesn't have any benefit to them. Same with my favorite example of a First World Problem: the double pole. Pole cracks, utility puts a second pole beside it as an emergency repair. Now their problems are solved while residents' living nightmare is only beginning. They have to look at TWO POLES! This is actually a serious political issue in neighborhoods with no real problems to complain about.

This may seem like a really good idea.  Until the tree gets a little bigger.  When that happens, the roots become a nightmare.  Also, the trunk will get wider, stuff will fall off onto passing cars.  This doesn't even account for what happens when it comes time to repave the road.

This is sorta like when someone buys a tiny piglet, because it seems so cute.  2 years later, they have a 300lb pig hanging around and eating everything in sight.

And here I thought nothing could be more obnoxious than a roundabound. This is like a a roundabound without an intersection.  Why didn't they just turn the intersections into roundabouts? it'd accomplish the same thing.
