This. (No offense, Subby, we all have our hits and misses).
The people unfamiliar with the meme won't get it.
The people familiar with the meme (and like it) will be annoyed Subby didn't fully commit.

I always wonder what a person is thinking when they've got a what?  $85,000 per year job, and they risk it to steal $900?

I understand financial desperation, but if $900 will fix your problem, you don't have it.  And, if $900 won't fix your problem, why are you stealing it?

This is all ethical situations aside.  Like, forget that you shouldn't steal it at all, ever.

This makes zero sense from any angle I approach it.

Uh what? Are you saying the parents of the special needs child made this up? Because it's the deputies who counted the money originally... Are they in on it too?

Teachers counted it, that line is a tad confusing.

Oh man that line is really poorly written then, but I can see it your way. There's also this: "Detectives later determined Abernathy kept the rest."

There's been some investigation here. It's not just a mom on Twitter complaining that her kids principal is stealing.

I wonder if that photo was taken in the Twin Cities. There is probably more than one van like that around, but I used to see one driving around locally. And, the background looks like it could be this area.

Sometimes you just can't understand why people do things.  Back in the day I walked at least 25 people out the door for surfing porn at work.  Hell, I caught and walked out a guy who stole a case of coffee from the company and his wages these days would be probably $150k.
