It's more the 5 hours thing, not shooting anything, than the gas... that they have issue with.

Russian law enforcement definitely knows about "mysterious gas":
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moscow_theater_hostage_crisis

...they were faced with 40 terrorists holding 850 hostages, so they gassed them and killed all the terrorists...and over 200 of the hostages.

I believe Bootlieg was implying flatulence.

As for "special guns", they're called 40mm grenade launchers. When you hear of police departments buying grenade launchers or getting some from Uncle, someone always gets their panties in a bunch, screaming about the militarization of the police and there being no justification for police to use grenades, much less launch them. That's how tear gas grenades are fired. For example, Scarface's "lil' frien'" to whom he asked people to say "'ello" was an M16A1 5.56mm rifle with an M203 40mm grenade launcher mounted under the barrel.

Careful now, that's what they're using the justify armored vehicles because "cars are bad cover". Canadian engine blocks are made of of paper mache.

Tear gas like any chemical weapon is a crap shoot. It can be effective in confined areas, but 2-5% of the population is resistant or immune and if they toss out the canister quickly, it does jack fark because it doesn't get to release enough. It looks like he had a hunting rifle or something around that range in energy based on the bullet hole and alive constables.

\You need more material penetration to shoot through the front of a car to kill a target
\\either more velocity or a harder and more dense projectile
\\\like tungsten carbide or hardened W-2 steel, which both shatter easily when impacted too hard

An engine block will cover most shots fired even in a war zone. The armored vehicle is for SWAT to end stand offs like this and to respond to when officers encounter more firepower than they can take on. Just a call for backup.

Now, and armored car is all you should need for SWAT to deal with anything. Anything worse than that, you contain, watch, and follow while you have the National Guard or US Military activated to deal with it. They have the tools and the talent to do it safely (mainly the tools). Too many police departments want to handle everything, especially in large cities with large budgets, when they can't possibly do so.

Your SWAT or "riot" officers should not be equipped heavier than troops patrolling a hostile area. Police are not the Army. Police are definitely not the USMC (too many things have not gone missing, well, non drugs). You do not need an IUD fortified vehicle. You will not be the first target (well, an armored vehicle won't). You will know if you need one and can CALL FOR BACKUP! YOUR ARE NOT ROBOCOP!

\Robocop would look at the "Blue Wall" and then just upload all the video he had to convict every dirty cop he had seen
\\Judge Dread and RC, I can't think of many characters that would be able to deal with the corruption without some crisis

Wednesday's lengthy standoff between an armed shooter and police saw "numerous" shots fired at the hands of a teenager, say Winnipeg police.

Well, that's where they farked up, Shooting a gun out of someone's hands only works in the movies. If they'd have shot for center mass, they'd have been back at the donut shop before the first morning's batch cooled down.

There is a 2% to 5% portion of the population that is resistant to CS gas. There is a portion of that resistant group that is effectively immune. In US Army and USMC training, they teach you to use your chemical warfare gas mask by exposing you to tear gas, CS, including exposing you to the most likely (and barely legal) chemical weapon you would run across and then making you put your mask on correctly.

This training has found many recruits that are immune to the effects of CS gas (and CS in case you are wondering about basic Mace). Immune or resistant to the point that Drill Instructors have ordered anyone claiming resistance to stay in the "smoke house" (not the right term here, but a better one than the one I know) unmasked until they can stand it no longer. This is to teach those that have the resistance how much time they have. Then you get the recruits that stay in there for hours and feel NOTHING.

\this is yet another reason why "Mace" didn't work for less than lethal, other than the decon of the police car for the CS
\\cops panic when a way of dealing with a person does not go as training said it should, especially for less than lethal force
\\\this is because some of them really don't want to go that far
\and then there are those that panic at a belly button and unload their whole fire arm
\\with self investigation and the "blue line", how can they deal with the panic based shootings, let alone the racist ones
\\\'To Serve and Protect' really needs 'the Public' added it
\fear is the mind killer and the slashie rule killer!

American police prefer "burners"  which are grenades filled with tear gas.

Fun Fact: Burners are known as such because they set everything around them on fire.

Fun Fact: Tear gas, at least the kind US cops like, turns into a cyanide compound when exposed to flames.

Ah, yeah I remember that.  That was when those religious wackjobs armed to the gills burned their own compound to the ground while they were inside it as the feds started moving in.  And that was somehow Janet Reno's fault.

Unsurprisingly the "hold a gun to your own head" move works better in Mel Brooks movies.

I've a friend in the army (no idea of his current rank) who's immune.  First discovered it on the field during training when "smoke" wafted past him, a gas grenade having landed near him upwind. Not affecting him, he assumed it was just a smoke grenade ... until his drill sergeant or whatever started yelling at him.

He talked about the "smoke house" laughing, that he might as well have simply been in a cigarette smoke-filled bar for all it bothered him.
