phishrace: texdent: When isn't California on fire?

As Johnny Carson once wisely pointed out to David Letterman, sometimes the mudslides put out the wildfires.

anyone hear anything new about the people trapped in town with the fire trucks out of gas? Last I heard even the tankers couldn't fly becuase of all the smoke..did they manage to get out safely?

With all the confusion and twitter chatter it's hard to be certain who's still sheltering in place and who's been evacuated, how many or where. I think the group that was at the Walgreen's got evacuated and everyone's out of the hospital, but it's unclear what other groups there are or exactly where they are. There was one group I saw a tweet about that was in a "safe" place (surrounded by fire) and the implication was they were sheltering in place with fire fighters.

Meanwhile there are two new sizeable fires blowing up in Ventura County.

Holy shiat the Hill Fire above Camarillo has blown up to 10,000 acres in two hours. Farking hell. Camarillo and UC Channel Islands being evacuated.

The hell do we have here anyway?  Santa Ana winds?  En Nino?  What a nightmare this must be for the locals.

As some one that had to deal with the Carr file let me give you all down in Paradise some sage advice.

The fire can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear.

My friend evacuated, fears she lost everything.

Another fire just started around the Thousand Oaks area, near where the bar shooting was yesterday. It's already grown to 10,000 acres and has shut down Highway 101 in the area.

I'm seeing that. The ones I was referring to were the people by the Walgreens, I think, so good to know they got out. Now I am worried about the group of people by the equestrian center outside Camarillo..

A real reason to love Fark. People really care about others. I have friends in Marin county and up near Santa Rosa. I hate to hear this stuff. The poor firefighters. Been a tough year. Donation going out as soon as I figure which station to send it to.

Crap.

Yikes. That's an area that's going to burn very badly. It's dry and the vegetation is a particularly flammable kind. Lots of smaller rural communities and little sort of hamlets with windy mountain roads. The linked article says a small hospital burned but another local source just says a single hospital building burned.

spaceman375: My favourite stream comes from Paradise: Radioparadise is one of the first internet "radio stations." So good they are totally supported by listener contributions only, zero ads. The music is...every kind. In one set you'll hear Duke Ellington, Fleetwood Mac, something from eastern europe or India, and John Prine, yet it all fits together. Give 'em a listen, give 'em some money, and pray they (and their feed) survive.
Really, it's an awesome stream, check them out.

Very good. I have rather eclectic musical tastes so this is right up my alley.

I have banged on before about Fark Added Value and this is a great example; come into a thread about fire and find a cool radio station. And of course, whatever LewDux posts is bound to be awesome.

/Listening to Goldfrapp, not heard that song in years.

Well, another person I know having to deal with this shiat. My brothers fiancee lost her dad this year, now her mom's house burned down. We live about 6 hours away so not much we can even do to help. Gonna take years of rain to limit the damage from these fires after all that drought. And that's probably not gonna happen.

Rain isn't the problem. A century of fire suppression has left a lot of fuel for the fires.

Hell several years of good rain seasons would increase the problems as that promotes more brush growth making things that much worse in a dry or drought season when it dies and is fuel for the next catastrophe.

Stone Meadow: One of my employees has a family cabin in Paradise (inherited from grandparents). They've put a bunch of work into it since grandpa died summer of '17...and he hopes their insurance is paid up.

His place is actually on the lake shore in Magalia, a couple miles north of Paradise. Magalia has been evacuated, but houses were burning in town by 7:30 this morning, so he is not hopeful.

Just go to the other Paradise, the one down the road from Intercourse.

2018-11-08 08:52:16 PM
Got a friend who's from the area, she said her parents have already lost their home, and now the hospital they both work at has burned down.  And as she puts it they barely got out alive.

When the first Spaniards arrived on the California coast, they reported good natural harbors and good land.

They also reported massive columns of smoke from the mountains, and astonishingly big earthquakes happening frequently.   This is the natural state of California.

When we set up camps and settled in this place, we chose to accept all that came with it.

Yes we did, but that does not mean we can't feel and share the pain of our friends and family.

How do you say " meh, those old people, what do they know?" In Japanese?

One of my company's customers was talking about it today. Has a friend that lives in Paradise but works in Chico. Said the smoke was unusually dark and streetlights came on as far away as Ukiah to the west and over the coast ranges. He didn't expect to have anything to go home to tonight.

2018-11-08 11:21:55 PM
Holy crap.
Parts of farking Chico now are being evacuated.
That is bad.

yeah
hospital, high school, k-mart, safeway..basically the entire downtown is gone.

And then there is the Hill fire.

It seems that the Atria seniors residence in Paradise was evacuated to Sacramento Marriott in Rancho Cordova. The seniors' residence was mentioned in earlier tweets as a location where people were stuck.

Seconded.

If the fire really jumped highway 99, it is now at the very doorstep of one of the nation's largest methamphetamine production districts.

If the winds stay out of the northeast, like they do in a  Santa Ana, the fire may end up south of the city.

Who's saying we can't?   I'm saying it's not unusual for this to happen.

These people basically live in a "fire alley" but I don't know if they all realize it.

Listening to the scanner all day kinda feels like listening to the Blitzkrieg. The wehrmacht just blew through Belgium and is poised to march on Paris and there isn't alot the army can do about it. For those who don't know, Belgium is being played by Paradise, Chico is Paris, and I really don't want Butte College to be Dunkirk but...

Ugh the number of tweets looking for elderly relatives who were in the Paradise area and haven't been heard from, many with mobility issues and living alone. Hopefully they're just being typical old people and don't have their cells turned on because "that's only for emergencies!"

Air was fine in Mountain View around 20:00 PT
Very smoky with some ash in Half Moon Bay by 21:30 PT, is making my eyes water even inside the house (local time is 23:10 PT or so).

This is going to be a rough one. :-(
