If you're playing that on a sub, it would be Wallyball, subby.

The Navy should spend their time arguing which movie was better: The Hunt for Red October or Crimson Tide.

stuffy: Can you even Barrel Roll a submarine?

There was a recent thread based on an interview in TheDrive. A career navy guy said a US carrier and Soviet sub made contact. They found a piece of propeller in the carrier hull, and he thinks the submarine rolled.

To me it sounds like a the kind of sensational anecdote that becomes accepted lore. But they interviewee believes it.

The real question is "should you" and the answer is how many crew-members do you want to kill in doing so?

This is good, though. Submarine warefare is probably a very complex thing, especially when it's sub vs sub. And it's not like the USN hasn't suffered from a lack of readiness and training over the decades...(we're looking at you, 7th Fleet).

If dudes playing volleyball comes off as homoerotic to you, you may be closet.

And though it's a cliche thing to end with, and people don't tend to really mean it when they say it, in this case I absolutely do.

It was the cinematography of it. Replace all the men with women in bikinis and you'd be at basically softcore porn.

If only for today

For anyone interested, this is a really good miniseries on the subject. 4 Brits and a Yank taking the "Perisher" course, the Royal Navy's final class to become command-qualified.

Theoretically? Yes, if you manage the ballast tanks and sail planes very carefully.

Lt. Commander Dodge: By strange coincidence you do, Sir.

I'm a fan of submarine movies, so I'll probably go see it. I don't see how it can match the testosterone of top gun, tho. My impression based on not a whole lot is that submarines activity is more like playing chess than hot dogging around in an airplane.
