(Yahoo)   In January, Todd Haley thought he'd been hired to eventually replace Hue Jackson. In October, Todd Haley thought he'd been called into the front office to replace Hue Jackson. He was wrong both times. Ladies and gentlemen, the Cleveland Browns   ( sports.yahoo.com) divider line

I hated Todd Haley when he was the coach in KC. Made Bill Belichick look engaging and funny by comparison. Of course, he didn't have the record to back it up.

Perhaps in the intervening timeframe the Browns ownership and GM came to the conclusion that Haley was a pain in the ass and was contributing to the poisonous dis-function of the team, and maybe they realized they didn't want to make a head coach out of the guy who was consistently undermining and backstabbing the current head coach.

I agree that likely weighed into it.   Also, in today's political climate, installing that type of character, who is white, into the former role of a black guy whom they just fired would not generate the best optics.     I'd guess they thought about considering him, but it would not be worth the questions raised..... just easier to can both of them instead.

Meh, the Lions fired a black coach who was a great leader, cared greatly for his team, had his guys fight hard for him every game, and was the only full time head coach in my 40 year lifetime to leave the Lions with a winning record with the team.

They replaced him with a white head coach who is a complete asshole and treats the team like shiat, causing the team to quit on four games so far this season in addition to being nearly as bad of a game manager as his predecessor.

No one cares. If anything, they love the asshole who can't lead a starving man to bread because he's "tough" and will "change the losing culture" by, apparently, taking a middle of the road team that won more than it lost and turning it into a crap team that will be lucky to win 6 games this year.

The Browns also ended up replacing the black coach with a white coach with not the most sterling of reputations, who actually got suspended for being super-dirty. So, it's a bit difficult to believe that optics played into it.
