College students are the worst pet owners.  Each semester year the local pet shelters fill up with abandoned cats and dogs as soon as a school ends.  Also, I know of multiple parents who now have their son or daughter's college pet living with them.

College roommates:  "Oh cool, let's get a cat for the apartment".
Weeks later: "The cat shiat in the bathtub again, your turn to clean it up" "Meh, I never said I wanted a cat" (tosses cat outside for good)

I had an iguana, freshman year.    It was sort of in the grey area of rules, and i made it a month or so with him, but then they finally cracked down and had to send him back home.

Domesticated reptiles actually can get a severe separation anxiety, and he was dead within a few weeks.
