I picture him at home playing Madden (playing himself of course) occasionally checking his phone to make sure he didn't miss a call.

I can see his next negotiations starting with "you are going to pay me the $8million I lost because I sat out last year right?"

Don't assume the Steelers still want him.

As ESPN pointed out this morning, James Conner has out paced Bell's stats from last year.

Guess we're starting to see that Bell put up big numbers all this time because of the Steelers' line, not because of his skills.

To be fair, it's both. Don't forget, he was a college ball super star.

When he comes back, unfortunately, they will play him instead of making him field punts all week before marking him inactive for the game, like they should.

the line definitely helped him, but don't pretend for a second it was the second coming of the 1990-1995 Cowboys OL.   They had 2 guys really well suited at playing a balance of in/out zone and  counter/trap plays. A lot of what Me'Veon did was actually pretty impressive single ability and timing/vision for plays that the OL couldn't really execute properly.   The other 3 are much better suited to old fashioned power man blocking.   The best part is the return to a much more power man blocking scheme has them playing more in sync overall and it is extending to pass protection.    I just wish they'd bring even more of that spread screen/slant game they've been mimicing from NCAA and the Pats while they're playing out of their 11 personnel and winning in the power run game.    Even with the OL playing pretty well, a lot of the success for Conner is of his own making too.  He has good but not great vision, but he excels at making yardage through contact. He has outstanding balance, body control , and knowledge of leverage.

Conner was a great back in college. Could be they are both skilled. Could also be a combination of skills, a good line and/or good coaching.

Proved what point? What? How? And reading this text wasn't difficult. It's not like I had to unlock some secret codex with a type of rosetta stone. It was English, just upside-down. Was it the right-to-left thing he thought we'd have issues with? I don't get it.

And secondly, platooning two or more decent running backs for the same or less money is certainly better than having a single overpaid running back. It is an over-valued position that smart teams don't buy into.

This is exactly what the Steelers wanted. They get to ride him for the last half of the season/playoffs, saving some wear and tear on the new guy so that Connor can be the workhorse they use for the next 3 years, then kick to the curb again.

RBs are expendable in the current NFL. You run them hard for a few years then move on, you don't commit big money to them for long periods.

At this point the Steelers want him to sit out the entire season and go be someone else's problem next year

Pretty sure that's not what the Steelers want.

that was supposed to say

uhhhhh... why ?

now I'll explain why I (tried to) say that.

they might finally have some salary cap space with possible BigBen retirement (if that happens), bad contract dead money rolling off , and Me'Veon gone.  They could make some splash FA signing. They're bullheaded enough to give Dupree a market value C2 because they pretty much HAVE TO draft 2 CB and 2 ILB this draft.   Why would they want to kill $10M of cap space liquidity during that period by tagging him?

Check CBS SPORTS, among other outlets, his agents found a CBA loophole.

And ah hell, Antonio Brown got busted earlier driving over 100mph, on McKnight Road near Babcock Blvd.

This is what I was referring to with the transition tag option.  Essentially from the way I read it they have a chance to match offers but if he doesn't get one likes they can negotiate a lower tag number.

Granted letting him walk with a compensatory pick would be nice too.

He has to sign by Tuesday to be eligible to play at all this season. If he does, the Steelers can use a roster exemption for up to two weeks where he doesn't take up a spot and they don't have to pay him

I understand that. but while* he is tagged- even if he ends up signing elsewhere -   that $ counts against the Steelers salary cap. that could last weeks or months.   all $10M of it.  Considering that is about 25% to 65% (depending if BigBen retires or not) of their expected FA budget, it seems like a dumb decision to make it il-liquid for a prolonged period for this purpose.

He hasn't been playing for +/- 1.5 years in a sport where, on a great day, he may have 24 touches.    The Steelers aren't going to be dumb.  Franco wanted more, say hello to Seattle for us.
