Oldest (and dumbest) trick in the book.

What, did they cut the tank open then weld it shut? Should have done the French Connection method and used the rocker panels. If those are still a thing.

Can't be true, it doesnt fit in with the current dialogue that is being pushed by the govt that the gangs are getting guns via straw purchases.

Most of the gas tanks on cars I have seen** post-2000 or so are high impact plastic, so cutting one open and epoxying it closed again wouldn't be a huge chore.  Not as bad a job as if it were a metal tank, anyway.

**Not a mechanic, just the "go-to guy" when peoples fuel pumps fail, apparently

Probably found fresh tool marks like wrench slip on a bolt head. Or the driver sitting in her own pee puddle during inspection.

Most likely dropped the tank, pulled out fuel pump assembly. This leaves a fairly large opening to stuff all sorts of things in there.

Re-install fuel pump, strap tank back up and you are done.

They probably had a plate number ratted out from someone busted in the US. It's not NCIS, most cases of this sort of thing are from narcs.

You do when the illegal dispensaries can't source from the LPs. Their demand is up because the legal side can't keep up.

From the article:  "Police allege the guns had been legally purchased in the southern United States..."

If the guns were purchased for the purpose of smuggling them into Canada to sell them to gang members, then by definition they weren't legally purchased.   That's the definition of a straw purchase.  Perhaps the author only meant to say the guns were not stolen.

Common "soft ban" tactic: legalize it, then put in so many hurdles that the commodity is limited and pretty much impossible to obtain.

My comment was facetious, I didn't need to read the article. Goodale has been pushing using a made up stat (pulled from the nether regions of a Toronto cop) for C-71 that half of the guns in Canada are domestically sourced through either stealing from Restricted owners or through straw purchases in Canada and not that they are being smuggled in (which C-71 does nothing for). He has been called on it by everyone including CBC and they keep repeating it

Sepia apama: Some people will go the extra mile for leaded gasoline.

The only reason you'd need leaded gasoline these days is if the engine is an old one which needs tetraethyllead to help lubricate it or to get a high enough octane rating for the engine to actually run.

A lot of WWII-era aircraft engines will run just fine when fed 87 unleaded.

When Finland was searching for military aircraft back then one of the requirements waas that the engine didn't need anything better than 87 octane because that's the best they could reliably get.

Nah giving the govt too much credi, in this case (Ontario specifically) it is purely growing pains caused by the change of provincial administration coupled with a MJ industry that had problems keeping product in stock when it only needed to cover medical card carriers. None of this is a surprise to those who were in the system before it became recreational

Snarfangel: Smuggling pot into Canada?

The woman driving the car had 25 of the 30 guns, and no drugs.  The rest of the guns and drugs were seized afterwards.   The source of the drugs is not clear.   She might have given up names and locations, but it's also possible she was followed to her destination.

1) Never smuggle guns AND drugs. You want a drug sniffing dog to find your guns?
2) You don't need to wrap guns in plastic if you store them in gas, in fact, don't.
3) I could go on, but I'm already on a list.

You can, but it will raise some red flags, and will most likely result in a call from an ATF agent.

berylman: Can you really buy that buy that any handguns in one go or do you have to shop around?

In my state I could leave now and be back in an hour and have a trunk full of them.  No limit and no waiting period.     Purchasing more than one handgun from the same licensed seller in a week will get reported to the ATF, but only for the purpose of making it possible to investigate gun trafficking if one of those guns is reported stolen or turns up in a crime a short time later.   There's no requirement to investigate the sell or other ongoing screening.  A few border states have the same rule for rifles.

So, somebody intending to traffic guns would either have their purchaser shop around or just take their chances.   Or, more likely, just buy them from a private individual.  Within most states you can buy as many guns as you want without background checks or anything getting reported to anybody as long as there's no reason for the seller to believe the buyer is a resident of the same state and legally able to purchase/possess a gun.

Gun sniffing dogs will pick up on that, too. And WD-40.
You want to get a gun in Canada?

Get a moose permit.

the hell is the matter with people?
what do they need guns for?
intimidation?

I'll tell you what is intimidating.
Some drunk, fat, toothless Newfie chick who thinks you are cute cornering you in the mens' room of a Nova Scotia Pub and telling you you ain't leaving the island unless you go down on her fish trough.

Come to think of it, I could use a gun now and then.

But Canada has gun control. This sort of this isn't suppose to happen. Thats what anti-gun people say.
