The reason isn't entirely clear, but one possibility is that minority and younger voters are concentrated in larger counties without the resources to do aggressive outreach.

Earlier in the article...

Gwinnett County, just outside of Atlanta, posted absentee ballot rejection rates of just 2.5 percent for white voters, but nearly 15 percent for Asian Americans and 8 percent for African Americans.

If Asian and African American ballots are rejected at higher rates in one county I don't thing county size is the problem.

....15,765 absentee ballots had been rejected due to a signature issue, according to data reported by Florida counties and made available to Smith, who has long studied the issue. Of those, 12,261 have no signature....

Really, no signature??!!  What the hell people?   Call me paranoid, but I read the instructions at least 4 times when filling out my ballot last week.  Partially because I was being extra careful, and partially because my reading comprehension is shiat.

I was stressed out. I've never mailed anything before. Where do you buy stamps? How many stamps do I need? What's a postmark? Signing things makes me nervous. I never learned cursive, I just write block letters. Why can't I just post a photo of my ballot on Snapchat or scan it with an app on my phone?

/Truly, life is beset with obstacles

In comparison, banks won't even check your signature on a cheque you signed, until you cry foul. And even then, they're going to consider everything except your signature to try to prove you had the intent to write it.

My household's ballots (3 of them) didn't need stamps. But I can't be sure if that's because we live in a vote-by-mail only prescinct.

Stamps seem like they would be a poll tax in this case.

You have an absolute right to have your vote counted. And if you vote Republican it will be counted immediately

People who vote Democrat, however, are known to be possibly hippies or even brown. Gotta make sure all THOSE people can dot all the i's and cross all the t's and even then... Might be some kind of foreigner so we need a pint of blood.

And then if you survive the cagematch with the bear, we'll let you exercise your absolute right to vote for some hippie liberal.

I'm not sure if you are serious, but I agree. If the number of ballots counted incorrectly is less than one in a trillion, we have definitely failed somewhere.

Also, if our polling stations are significantly below absolute zero in temperature or contain more than a million people each, I think we also have a problem.

Signature problems affect voters of all of all parties and demographics, but data shows young and minority voters, as well as registered Democrats more broadly, are more likely to have their ballots rejected.

This sounds familiar.

Checking the status of your ballot in Washington State -- where all ballots are mail-in, and no postage is required -- is pretty simple. Go here and fill in the blanks -- simple.

I'm happy my vote was counted -- at least so says our Secretary of State.

My house is 800+ feet above sea level but I just bought new swim flippers just in case the blue wave gets up to my porch -- one can never be too careful.

I realize every state has different policies for mail-in ballots.  But I thought the Post Office rules were to deliver them regardless of whether they had been stamped or prepaid.

THIS -- Now -- handling the ballot with no signature -- I get.

This is not to say signature matching is insanely stupid.  (Hell...I'm a lefty -- depending on the writing surface, my signature is gonna be similar, but you will not get a match from me 100% of the time.  My penmanship has been, is, and always will be horrid.)  Old people lose dexterity, so it may adjust their signature over time...how rushed is someone from the time the provided the original signature to when they catch the ballot....few people, I'd venture a guess, can give a 100% match to their signature -- and the law allowing to deciding for that is a tad too arbitrary anyway....so yeah -- the law sucks and should be changed, no question.

At least notify those that had no signature to the address on their voter registration so they can provisional or something.  It's really not rocket surgery, FL -- I wonder why this seems so difficult.....What purpose could this possible serve in a state that is decidedly quite ethnically diverse...Hmmmm....'tis a puzzler.

/FL voter...
//they checked my signature when I went to the polls last week and got my ballot.
///the checker was not a hard ass, and who thanked me for coming to vote.

True -- I'm in Broward, and checked it two days after I voted, and it states for this election I voted at an early voting location.  Also should give the numbers for your county -- Broward had over a million early voters as of Friday when I last checked.

In Florida you have to put two stamps on it. I have noticed the more liberal states generally do not require postage.
