Of things I'd think could fall on my home, a gyrocopter only ranks slightly higher than meteors and space capsules containing dead chimps

I could so go for one...

So anything that spins round and round very quickly will attack a mobile home.

Huh, can't find a picture of a gyro sandwich with copter blades

I'd be fairly happy if I could get gyros or shawarmas delivered by any old kind of rotor driven aircraft.

Weird how he flew a car and a train, but couldn't fly something built to fly.

FAA investigators will begin looking into what caused the crash

Gyrocopter.  It's not a question of "if it will crash", but "when"

The pilot built an ELA that crashed at KSEF earlier this year.
Also, my buddy Angus was killed in one of those things back in the 90s at Sebring.

They'll reroute it through Ceylon and Burma.

I'm a member of the Rotary Forum you linked to. Learned of Chris Lord's death yesterday and was extremely saddened. I'm currently building a gyroplane but want to correct a misconception about them. Many designers in the 80s and 90s were unaware of things like centerline thrust and unknowingly modified their machines in ways that were dangerous. Their bad reputation was well deserved back then, but things have progressed far.

OK.  Then your assessment of Cammie Patch's CFI rant at that link?

Bbviously the barriers to entry for rotor wing flight, or at least ownership, are much lower than for a full-powered helo... but I'm not sure the path.  Can someone just wander up and say, "Teach me to fly them gyros!"   It looks like the Sport Pilot license might allow just that.

Is it first possible and if so, wise to let a full-newb go straight to a gyro?  You say that the craft themselves are more safe now, but that linked story says a student pilot tried to turn left onto a taxiway while the rotor was still very energetic.  Isn't the basic gyroscope effect something an instructor should be drilling, drilling, DRILLING into a new gyro pilot?

Absolutely. I'm not yet a pilot but training is the single most important part of safety. Many single-seat designs are flown as non-registered ultralights, so one is free to jump in and go kill themselves without training. Many have perished in foolishly doing so. I don't know enough about the particulars of the crash to have an opinion, but will be awaiting the report from the investigation.

Well, gyrocopters are the mobile homes of the helicopter world...
