Catlenfell: I assume everyone knows I masturbate and would tell them to blow it out their asses.

This.

My policy has always been, "Don't do what you don't want people knowing about."

This keeps me from committing a variety of crimes and obviates the need to worry about my porn-viewing habits.

Yeah we got a couple of these this week. Real smarmy farkin letter with a "here is your password" line. Guy who got it said it was no password he's ever used or heard of.

Omi gosh, people could learn that I have a thing for chubby/curvy 30 year old brunette women.  I'm as boring as everyone suspects.

/ got one of those scam emails.
// It's a good reminder to go and put good unique passwords on anything important.

So we've gone past "Simpsons did it" and have moved on to the less-suspected "Black Mirror did it" phase.

// so when does Teresa May fark a pig?
// related to the point, what's Nigel Farage up to these days?

I'm just thrilled to have someone along for the ride.

I get those occasionally, but the password they give is a fragment of an old password that I haven't used since I was in high school, so I figure if they managed to get pictures of me fapping 18 years ago, before we had a webcam or any sort of digital camera in the house, more power to them.

Having my own email server allows me the luxury of setting up a unique email address for every internet account.  It also makes it easy to see exactly where these kinds of extortion emails sourced from... and the list is quite interesting.  There are some very big name websites that have been breached to obtain email addresses.  I wonder how much they'd pay to stop me from telling all their friends about it?

I received this yesterday with the subject line "Hello, Victim":

hello, my prey.

I write you since I put a trojan on the web site with porno which you have viewed.
My virus grabbed all your personal info and switched on your web cam which captured the process of your onanism. Just after that the trojan saved your contact list.
I will delete the compromising video and data if you send me 999 EURO in bitcoin.
This is wallet address for payment : 1BdMUUwx5bD1xePqKwGuqguxKphSvr97wj

I give you 30 hours after you view my report for making the transaction.
As soon as you open the message I'll see it immediately.
It is not necessary to tell me that you have sent money to me. This wallet address is connected to you, my system will erased automatically after transfer confirmation.
If you need 50h just Open the calculator on your desktop and press +++
If you don't pay, I'll send dirt to all your contacts.
Let me remind you-I see what you're doing!
You can visit the police office but anyone can't help you.
If you attempt to cheat me , I'll see it right away!
I don't live in your country. So anybody can't find my whereabouts even for 9 months.
Goodbye. Don't forget about the shame and to ignore, Your life can be destroyed.

/don't have a webcam

if they want to watch me while I make my 90 minute drive home in rush hour traffic, I hope they're enjoying the peep show.
Kidding, of course.
Maybe.
serious about road trips with the wifey though - truckers can get a pretty good look at interesting stuff.

CFO guy from my previous comment did say it was a password he had used. We determined he signed up for a sports forum that had it's passwords breached. Email senders probably just sent email to everyone on that list and filled in their passwords. Fortunately it wasn't his email password so that part was fake.

I had him change all his passwords anyway just to be safe.

/ don't reuse your passwords people
// get a password manager

You should have asked about the lighting, and if you should hook up additional cams to get picture-in-picture from multiple angles.  Then tell them they owe you $50 because cam shows aren't free.

/is it wrong that I sometimes wish I'd get these emails just so I can respond back?

I've been getting these recently, but the bizarre thing is they're in Japanese.

The best part is that they claim being sent from my own address to myself is proof they've hacked my email. Despite the password given having never been my email password. Or that they fail the gmail spf check, having been sent from some random IP somewhere.

A friend got that with a password he used for too many things. He uses a mac (running 10.10.5) but has time machine backups. I told him to buy a new backup disk and not use the old one incase it has crypto locker type stuff.

Differential backups are good. Things get real big real quick when something messes with all the files.

I have a catchall email on a domain I own so I too create unique email when I sign up for something. The first one that got spam was one I used for Hotels dot com, but it could have been someone at the hotel itself responsible rather than the website.
I've got loads of these, almost all caught by a spam filter.  Some did have an email that I think I used many years ago.
I don't have a webcam on my PC so it would be a neat trick if they could have recorded me doing anything.
