I must have grown up in a slightly different generation, because I grew up watching William Alexander, the man who taught Bob Ross everything he knew and who is the original man behind "happy little trees."  Despite the fact that both had their own shows on PBS (Ross after Alexander), I never got to see Bob Ross do his thing back in the day.

I have watched all of the Bob Ross episodes on NetFlix and now occasionally dig into the ones on Amazon Prime.  So soothing.

I went as Bob Ross for Halloween last year (costume contest at work, which I won,) have a Bob Ross plaque on my wall to hang my keys on (gift from daughter,) have a Bob Ross tee shirt (gift from wife) and got a Bob Ross coloring book (gift from daughter.) Bob is awesome, but my family thinks I love nothing more than Bob Ross gifts.  It is time to get me something different!

My son has two Bob Ross tee-shirts and the Funko Pop as well.

I requested to be photoshopped for either my birthday or a Farkaversary, and someone PS'ed me as Bob Ross. I used it as a FB profile pic, and a couple of years ago received some photo coasters for Xmas. One of them bears the PS of me as Bob Ross:

*checks the tubes*

I used to watch him, too, I'm pretty sure.  He doesn't look particularly familiar to me, but the voice rings a bell.  I definitely recall watching a man with a foreign accent who would "power red" over his mistakes.  I watched tons of Bob Ross as well, and tried painting along with him once or twice when I was in high school, but never got the knack for it.

True; Ross presented it in a way that attracted a lot more people to his program however.

I'm old. Used to watch John Gnagy, back in the late 50s, early 60s. I even had a "John Gnagy Painting Kit" when I was about 8.

Bob Ross Days...

Someone above said "soothing". I totally agree. Nothing like a rainy day, Bob on the TV and a nice warm comfy sofa blanket. Then I wake up to a re-run of Masterpiece Theater a few hours later.

Bob Ross is back, and cooler than ever.  The merchandise is selling well, people listen to him as meditation, and yeah, you can even paint pictures with him, if you want.  I do.  And posted them to the Facebook, and now my friends are coming over for Bob Ross painting parties.

CSB -

When I was @ Ball State back in the '80s, Bob Ross would film all of his episodes @ WIPB on BSU's campus. Seasons 2-10 were shot while I was there - he would come in for a few days and shot an entire season of episodes, back to back, 30 minutes at a time.....and unless there was a camera or production issue, with no script...in ONE TAKE. What you saw was real - a full painting done, start to finish in less than 30 minutes....with no edits.

Even cooler CSB -

Bob Ross has his fans, I consider myself one of them. My Mother, on the other hand, she despised him. As soon as I changed the channel to our local PBS station she would just go off about how silly and stupid she found him. I have never found out why. All she has ever told me is that she found him annoying.

Who on earth find Bob Ross annoying?

He was filming the third painting. He painted one to figure it out, one to show as the final and one for the camera. Dude came prepared for when it was time to film.

Some time ago I wound up in the mess of Wiki exploring something and stumbled across Bob Ross.  Turns out he was a bit of a badass in the armed forces, after he left the service he vowed never to be mean or yell at anyone ever again, hence his soft-spoken voice and demeanor.

Not to be a downer, but I don't like Bob Ross' paintings. It's soothing to watch him paint them, but just looking at them isn't very interesting. His landscapes are basic and rather flat.

OTOH I love that he encouraged people to paint, and did such a basic style so people weren't intimidated. A lot of artists started because of him. I never liked it when my own teachers would shiat on Bob Ross in front of students.
