...right up to the point where that starts affecting property values.

Lisa Licata and Sherry Lau initially told their neighbors they were mother and daughter when they first moved into their Penn Hills home after hearing them making a bigoted comment, WTAE Pittsburghreports.

I really hope they cleared that up before moving on to the we're eating out while at home part of the presentation.

Interesting. See, I'd say that a house full of open bigots has a far more negative effect on any property value than any paint pattern. But if they want to be able to tell people how to paint their own houses, they should move to a community where personal choice and freedom doesn't matter. They could just look for one with an HOA. Hopefully "bigoted asshole" won't violate the existing covenants.

In my town at least, that rainbow house would be welcomed with open arms and have zero effect on neighboring property values (other than a positive one). But this is Pennsylvania, so you might have a point.

Its kinda like that thing from 2nd grade math; All Squares are rectangles but not all rectangles are squares in the same way that all HOAs are bigoted assholes, but not all bigoted assholes are HOA members. Lifes funny like that.

I appreciate the point they are trying to make, but deliberately antagonizing isn't a solution.  Suppose the neighbor reciprocates by painting his house a bright red and draping a MAGA mural on it?  Does the gay couple have any right to complain?

I dont understand people. I have bigoted views. Everyone does. It's human nature. I cannot stand organized religion and think less of people who have fallen for it. But I have never and WOULD never allow that to show in any way. I have neighbors on my street that are ultra religious and we get along fine because I am not an asshole and neither are they. If they wanna howl at the moon and believe in zombie-Jesus they can have at it as long as it doesnt directly affect my well-being, property, family, etc. It baffles me that people in 2018 can't accept "live and let live" as a fundamental key to happy coexistence.

Apparently they aren't in a HOA community where they are required to pick from the palette of boring Earth tones or in a historic community where they can choose from the color the house was painted in 1853 or 1876.

Fark that. Silence equals assent. The worst thing you can do when a bigoted asshole attacks you is to meekly, quietly, accept it.

Sorry, but, no. Escalation is exactly what's called for here, to highlight the fact that the next-door neighbor is a bigoted asshole. Don't like being called out for your bigotry? Don't be a bigoted asshole. It's not hard.

Oh, so adding a splash of color is bad, but being a homophobic dick isn't?  If they didn't want a rainbow colored house in their neighborhood, maybe they should have tried being nicer.

I mean, Westboro's a gayborhood now, much to the chagrin of Westboro Baptist Church...and they're staring at a rainbow house across the street.

No, and that's the goddamned point.

But that's not what the bigoted asshole did. The bigoted asshole decided to tell someone else that they can't do what they're allowed to do in their own home, or on their own property, or in their own lives.

Again, fark this kind of bullshiat. They're not "deliberately antagonizing" anyone - they're responding to deliberate antagonism. This isn't the NFL - it's not the second player that gets the penalty here.

Exactly. Shine a light on the cockroaches of the world.  No-one should have to live in a world where they are forced to tolerate hate against them.  The more people witnessing this, the less chance of those cockroaches doing something harmful and getting away with it.

We have only one side as evidence.  I'm not saying the guy wasn't a dick, but we don't know the extent of his dickishness and whether the actions of the lesbian couple is proportionate.  Personally, I think that a measure of restraint is called for here.

Look. I'm from Minnesota. We're a passive aggressive people and it works. Best quality of life in the country in every category that counts - including one of the most friendly places for LGBTQ. Sometimes, just going about your life and living well within your tribe of family, friends and coworkers and ignoring assholes is OK. Stick up for yourself when laws are broken or you're in danger, sure, but if it's childish name calling, maybe you don't need to go to Def-Con 1 immediately.

This inability to mind one's own farking business is the number one problem in America today. If everyone in the country did nothing but mind their own farking business and vote in their own completely selfish best interest, America would be a much greater country.

I thought needing to be bigoted assholes was kind of an implicit clause of most HOAs.

I checked - Zillow does not have a "neighbor percent confirmed bigoted" metric on their site, as far as I can tell.

Ignoring someone is not rolling over. Many times, the best response is no response.
Sure painting the house in rainbow colors is going to antagonize the asshole neighbor. But they have turned their neighborhood into a visible neighbors having a spat zone. I'm sure the other neighbors that have nothing to do with this, really appreciate having this colorful exchange taking place in their neighborhood.
Of course, I'm ignoring my own advice and most likely feeding a troll.

I'm on the gay couple's side but agree this looks tacky.  A rainbow flag would've made their point and been a lot easier on the eyes.
