First he'll criticize the car industry bailouts, then he'll be painfully reminded that Ford didn't take a bailout, so then he'll blame Ford AND Obama for not giving Ford bailout money.

Simples.

well, given that we're talking about people who love money so much that they put their god on our currency...i'd say not a long wait at all.

here's the thing tho - the very powerful and the very stupid have one thing in common: both change facts to fit their worldviews and neither listen to reason.  should be interesting to see which one wins this particular slap fight.

There's room for restrictions and regulations on international trade.  That's not the same thing as entering a trade war unprepared and still expecting to "win."

It's the difference between disciplining a bully, and trying to subdue him physically when you have no skills.

sinner4ever: In World War II Bayer,Bmw and others used slave labor and we called it a war crime. Today it is called free trade.

The TPP, which was going to be the largest free trade deal in history, would have forced Vietnam, Malaysia, and other signatory countries to follow American-style workers'-rights protections. This was both a human-rights priority and a protection for corporate profit margins *and* a guard against the race-to-the-bottom pressure that forces American workers to compete for jobs against murderously cheap sweatshop labor. It also would have prevented those countries from ripping off the IP of American tech, media, and engineering workers without paying them.

Then Trump blew it up, with help from the Berniecrat left. So those countries get to keep undercutting us and get to keep exploiting their workers.

Free trade isn't the problem. Unrestricted free trade is a problem, just like unrestricted *anything* is problematic in a scarcity society. A good free trade deal protects workers in both countries by setting fair guidelines and regulations.

Fun fact: the big building in the upper center of that pic? My parents live there. Luckily they were in TN, but this hurricane is smashing their retirement dreams.
How am I going to tie this into the actual point of the thread? My dad recently retired from GM after 30 years of working the line. They'd saved up enough that retiring on the beach in a quaint Florida town was their dream now that the kids are out of the house and they have few reasons to stay.
Depending on how Trump manages this disaster and depending on what this trade war does to the auto industry and dad's benefits, well, their retirement could be completely farked by this administration.

/ Not that I needed personal reasons to disdain Trump and the GOP.

It's the ol' straw man argument.
If you don't like ripping children from the arms of their asylum-seeking mothers, you are for open, unrestricted borders.
If you would like to see efforts made to reduce carbon emissions, you are demanding a complete shut down of western civilization.
If you propose reasonable gun regulations, you want to go door to door with jackbooted thugs confiscating every firearm in America.
And so on - you encounter it in every discussion there is.

Yup. And I'll bet it hits hardest in Q1 next year.

Homebuilders here are shutting down interior work for the winter because they have a surplus of framed units ready to finish. The auto industry is teetering. Banks will be next to feel the hurt. Farmers won't be able to make capital loan payments that are coming due.

All we are waiting for now is a major drop in the market.

Here's the problem with your protectionism. The world exists and we have to deal with it. This isn't the age of sail any more - the rest of the world is a few mouse clicks away, and if you want to visit in person you can be there in less than a day in most cases. So we have to deal with them.

America has two things - a really farking big military and a lot of money. So we can just threaten everyone and hope that never blows up in our faces or we can use our money to influence the rest of the world. Trade agreements are a really good way of making that happen. We can encourage places in the world with terrible workers rights to improve them. We can open up closed societies. Hell, with the right pressure, we can stop a theocracy that hates us from building nuclear weapons in return for basic trade goods!

Do we use it perfectly? No, of course not. I'd love to see people who aren't already rich getting more out of our trade. I'd love to see more regulations about the finance structure of international companies and how they hide their money away. We're not doing it perfectly. But to react like the populists do and blow up trade agreements in favor of protectionist policies that were last feasible around the time of the Second Word War isn't a fix.

At a time when automakers are scrambling to prepare for self-driving cars, Ford is also struggling to keep pace with the rest of the industry.

Yea uhm, bought a Ford POS where it kept stalling out because of the BCM and some other  components kept going bad.  Multiple recals on the clutch and transmission to the point that I finally broke down and traded it in.

And when they can't fix crap like that, they really want me to trust their AI software for a driverless car?

I supported Clinton, but her take on the TPP was confusing and ignorant politi-speak.

First she called it the Gold Standard, then she opposed it, and like you say, had she won the election she would have supported it again.

The thing about our bailing on it, our absence from it only strengthens China. And Trump's hard-headed idiocy is only magnifying that.
