Humanity is already overpopulated beyond sustainable levels by a factor greater than x3.  So long as we can keep antivaxxer parents' kids quarantined away from sane parents' kids then I don't see the issue.  A few less stupid genes in the pool over the long run.

Said parents should really be criminally prosecuted for child endangerment. Not just for their own children if they contract the disease, but any others they pass it onto. Charges upgraded to actual bodily harm, negligent homicide / manslaughter if necessary.

3 SMRTZ"!!"1 already? That is not an intelligent comment. Not quite anti-vax level of stupid, but betrays a similar misunderstanding of how mass vaccination works.

I just found out that one of my nieces is anti-vax.  She married into our family, mainly because she was getting older and her prospects were becoming slim and none.  So, she's now 40, took more than a few tries to have a successful pregnancy, and the baby was colicky.  She wants more kids, but her regular ob-gyn says no go, so she's hunting for another one.  Meanwhile the one she already has is . . .different, but not on the spectrum different.  Probably more over coddled and not allowed to play with other kids enough, just really whiny and petulant.  But mom is all about how no one is going to put anything unnatural in her child.  This said while we are hanging out at the all you can eat buffet, and the kid is eating nothing but the desserts.  Makes me want to slap the taste out of her mouth.

How herd immunity is supposed to work - everyone who CAN be vaccinated is, so that those who can't be vaccinated are somewhat more protected since the disease would have less chance of gaining a foothold in the population to be passed around.  Since those who are refusing to vaccinate their kids are breaking the herd immunity, they are 1) endangering their children by leaving them open to the disease 2) increasing the chances exponentially that those who are too young or cannot be vaccinated be expose to the disease 3) giving the disease a growth medium. So I'm perfectly fine if those who are choosing not to get their kids vaccinated, so long as they isolate their children and themselves from everyone else.  It'll prevent the spread of the disease to others.  Give the disease it's own little petri dish to grow in and kill off/make life miserable for those who are making this choice.  If they want to keep their kids in the group of kids and get other kids sick with their choices, they should be on the hook for spreading diseases around.

Might have to shoot the kids to contain the infection. It's a hard choice to make but unlike their parents we have to think of the welfare of the whole society.

There is a private school here in Indianapolis that does not require vaccinations for children.  Parents choose this school because they aren't "pressured into using fake medicine" to get their children an education.  I, personally, think this is an amazing idea.  When one kid gets the measles, they can spread it to the rest of the unvaccinated and wipe them all at once.

How are you going to keep them quarantined? Besides, people are contagious before they show any signs of being sick.
Vaccines should be mandatory.

Someone on Fark suggested a while ago that people who choose not to vaccinate their kids should have to pay into an insurance fund for those who can't get vaccinated.

Because the reality is horrifying. People living under the blanket of modern medicine have become complacent. They have forgotten the horror. Do you know what your ancestors would say if they stood before you now? GET THE FARKING VACCINE YOU DOLT!

Or we could go back to wheeling carts around and crying for people to bring out their dead so we can burn the bodies.

Bad headline; bad logic. Try this: If vaccines work, then vaccinated persons have nothing to fear from any disease they have been vaccinated against. So, what is this fear really about?

People want free healthcare then don't use that free healthcare. This is socialized medicine in a microcosm. People feel things are worth what they pay for it. If it's free, it's not worth much.

FTFA: A significant minority of them did not have health insurance coverage. Health officials said that was a surprise because a government program pays for vaccines for uninsured children.

And how many hoops does the parent have to jump through to get their child approved for this program?
Anytime you try and deal with the Gov its a nightmare.

It's not that hard to give kids vaccinations in school. If parents don't provide the paperwork to show they're gotten their kids vaccinated, then the kids get to leave class for 10 minutes to get stabbed in the arm by the school nurse. It wouldn't give the kids protection while they're babies or toddlers, but it would stop school from being breeding grounds of diseases that we can prevent.

Isn't this the complete opposite of a Darwin Award?

Instead of removing themselves from the gene pool before they could procreate, they not only succeeded, but even worse are spreading diseases to others in said pool.

Old enough Farker here who had both measles and the mumps before those vaccines become ubiquitous.  There were nights my mother thought she was going to lose me and my sister because goddamit those diseases are horrific and there's pretty much nothing that you can do once you get them except ride them out and pray.  In their time, both my parents lost family members to these diseases along with influenza, polio and a whole host of other monstrous diseases. My mother was a public health nurse and she tells stories of towns losing an entire generation of children to these sicknesses.

If we don't learn from the past, we are doomed to repeat it.  And the past had a lot of slow, painful death that is today almost 100% preventable.

Oh there's pmenty of nutjobs. And if you have kids of school age, they aren't in it because of Mom's paranoia.

My CA county has the lowest % of vaccination in the state. We have nutjobs of every flavor. It's unnerving how a place of such natural beauty is also referred to as the Appalachia of the west. Antivaxxers is just one metric. It's no wonder why maladies one might think disappeared decades ago keep popping up here.
