mekkab: Had no idea that watch features/apps were called "complications."

Features on real watches - you know, the wind-up analog mechanical kind - were called "complications". Things like a stop watch, or a date, or phase of the moon. Called that because it made the mechanism more complicated. But it's total bullshiat to call a few lines of code a "complication" like it makes the watch harder to manufacture.

I guess all those H1-B programmers that Apple imports aren't quite the experts people thought.

I'm just leaving this here.  We in California think of a proposition for everything.

http://voterguide.sos.ca.gov/propositions/7/

PROP 7

CONFORMS CALIFORNIA DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME TO FEDERAL LAW. ALLOWS LEGISLATURE TO CHANGE DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME PERIOD. LEGISLATIVE STATUTE.
SUMMARY

Gives Legislature ability to change daylight saving time period by two-thirds vote, if changes are consistent with federal law. Fiscal Impact: This measure has no direct fiscal effect because changes to daylight saving time would depend on future actions by the Legislature and potentially the federal government.

WHAT YOUR VOTE MEANS

YES A YES vote on this measure means: The Legislature, with a two-thirds vote, could change daylight saving time if the change is allowed by the federal government. Absent any legislative change, California would maintain its current daylight saving time period (early March to early November).

NO A NO vote on this measure means: California would maintain its current daylight saving time period.

ARGUMENTS

PRO

Proposition 7 will end the biannual time changes that medical researchers and economists agree are hazardous to the health and productivity of schoolchildren, the workforce and seniors. Vote Yes on Proposition 7 to keep our children, workplaces and roadways safe. CON Proposition 7 allows for permanent Daylight Saving time, subject to federal approval. It would be light in the evening in the summer, as it is now, but winter mornings would be dark for an extra hour so children would be going to school in the dark.

DST is a real pain in IT, if your company is a multi-national. Some countries do, some don't and the dates are never consistent.

dont worry, soon they will announce a revolutionary, brand new technology that will automatically update your phones time when DST comes around. No one has ever come up with this before. It will be breaking the ground!

And you will have to pay an extra $500 for this new feature. The update will be pushed to your phone with our your permission. Along with Bono screaming at you

whidbey: Daylight Saving Time is bullshiat.

Nah, "standard" time is bullshiat.

So, it's obvious the government isn't going to fix this shiat.  What would it take to get together a big enough group to say NO?

I mean, how many of us have to just refuse to ever change our clocks again for it to stick?  For us to say "nope, not gonna 'fall back' ever again.  Not gonna change my clock.  I don't care what your clock says, mine isn't changing."

The switching back and forth is what's bullshiat. Generally the sun goes down later in the summer, and it's dark in the winter pretty much everywhere.

I use a Glycine GMT watch. Movement is 24-hour, so hour hand goes once around the dial every day.

Inner dial is for GMT, so hands never have to be moved. Outer dial is easy to rotate to whatever timezones (including DST, DDST, whatever).

I imagine that something so simple could be done with an electronic watch thingy, but having spent 48+ years in the IT industry, I'm not surprised by widespread stupidity...

Why can't programmers get this right? The rules are very simple. The computer internally keeps time as seconds in GMT. All interaction with the user can deal with local time zone adjustments. That fixes so many problems.

The QX-10 used a graphics chip called the NEC 7220 which was the fastest in its day. That chip knew how to draw a circle. A program to fill the screen with circles would take nearly a second on a PC yet the QX-10 was instant. The thing was designed to display Japanese which required better graphics than a typical PC or CP/M box doing ASCII.
