For good measure, DeSantis also claimed in his book that Obama was not truly a Christian, but became one out of convenience because "irreligion would be an impediment to forging political relationships."

One could say the same about DeSantis' humanity.  Being a soulless imp is not a real boost to one's political career.

At this point, I cannot pretend to be shocked that Republican candidates say this sort of thing. Here's the thing: even though it is no longer shocking, it is still deeply wrong. Evil that fails to surprise is still evil.

American Ledger, a project of the super PAC American Bridge, has unearthed a series of toxic arguments put forward by DeSantis in his 2011 book, "Dreams from Out Founding Fathers: First Principles in the Age of Obama," which he wrote while first running for Congress to bolster his credentials against President Barack Obama.

How fabulous

That's something that the Republicans have wanted since at least the 30's.  The reactionaries on the right have been pissed off that Lincoln had the audacity to take away their property, and now they hope that if they put the right people in federal office, that they'll get it back.

I mean, having the present prison slavery is one thing, but they'd like to have the old ways back ASAP.

I'm going to be very upset if this farker becomes Governor of Florida. 8 years of Rick Scott was enough

Unfortunately, Scott is using this hurricane to get himself in front of the camera as much as possible. I get that he's doing his job, but this storm could actually have a huge impact on the Senate race

He might be right that the South wouldn't have joined if not for the allowance of slavery. He's wrong that this was a good reason to allow slavery...rather, it was the first of more than 200 years worth of occasions where the South should have been told to join the modern world or fark off that was, sadly, missed.

I don't know how anyone not a sociopath could even do it. Hell, I get uncomfortable paying someone, even at above market rates, to do something I could damn well do myself.

Furthermore, his claim that allowing slaveowners to get extra congressional apportionment for each enslaved person they owned was somehow a gift to "anti-slavery states" simply defies logic

I think he meant NOT allowing.

Obama started "faking" his Christianity when he got involved with black churches during his time as a community organizer, right after college -- and years before his first run for office. Trump first mentioned being a Christian during the middle of his presidential run, when referred to the Eucharist as a little cracker because he wasn't aware that you could call it the communion wafer, the host, the oblation, the sacramental bread or any other term a grown up who has attended a church service uses to refer to the body of Christ.

The parties back then don't reflect what the parties are today.

For instance, did you know that the Republicans were once anti-war? The Republicans opposed both WW1 and WW2. Golly.

Do you deliberately choose to misunderstand everything people say, or is it a tic you just can't control?

There was no other option. It was allow the south to keep their slaves, or not have a United States...and the South would have kept their slaves anyway. (Britain would not abolish slavery until 25 years later)

Those were the only two choices, after all: union with slaves; separation without; and the infant nation could not have survived if half the states had refused to participate in the new government. What would have been your third option, in 1787, to split up and hope Great Britain didn't come back in 1790?

No, actually, they don't. The two sides of American politics that have good ideas to have civil disagreements over are the more traditional Democrats and the progressive wing. The Republican Party is the toxic runoff; they're everything that has no place in a sane political spectrum.

Please, though, I'm willing to hear what 'good ideas' you think the GOP has. The economic ideas that have consistently been shown to harm everyone but the ultra-wealthy? The foreign policy which amounts to megalomania? Their domestic policy which amounts to 'fark everyone that isn't a straight male WASP'? Please, enlighten me.
