I just imagine some of the people as I'm driving home.
It's like they're thinking, "The fast lane??!?!?  What do you mean FAST lane??!?!??  THEY'RE ALL 55 mph!!!  You have to break the law to pass me...  harumph...  55 is the speed LIMIT, that's as fast as you're allowed to go.. it don't mean you gotta go that fast..."

Give them a ticket for twice the price! US should follow the European model, where the left lane is designated for passing, not clogging up traffic. Go read your tweets in the right lane, or better yet, pull over.

Arizona could make a fortune if we did that. Or just charge them a "driving while old" out-of-state fee every month. Old Minnesotans are horrible drivers. The Canuck snowbirds don't seem to get in the way as much as  our domestic blue-haired Chen ninguis (snow bird). And they don't show up in huge blocks to vote down funding for local school districts like the Chen ninguis assholis domesticus (American asshole snow birds).

Sometimes the hero you need and deserve wears a badge.

In all seriousness, I still remember riding around the Miami area with one of my father's cousins in the '70s (we're Jews, cousin = uncle/cool dad in those days) and seeing minimum speed signs. I asked him what that was about. He said small pokes are faygalas. I knew faygala was an insult and left it alone. Now that I'm older ... oy.

Fark, I meant slow pokes (though I guess small pokes works too for Cousin Richie's response).

I hope the Michigan snow birds come back learning to not cruise in the left lane.  They won't, because they weren't that bright to begin with, but I can hope.  If they were that smart, they wouldn't go to FL to begin with.

So is the FHP with a $161 ticket for driving slow in the left lane

One ticket for left land blocking sounds about right for a state highway patrol. Then they'll go back to speed traps and write a thousand.

There are few exceptions but that's basically the law nationwide. States are starting to put punishments for it. I am glad

They do this in NJ.  It's always funny as hell to watch.

Also NJ:  PSE&G vans with a sticker warning you the maximum speed of the van is 70mph.  Our highest speed limit is 65...

Yeah, I'm going to agree with you. I commute all over Michigan as part of my job, and I don't run into very many slow folks in the fast lane. We in Michigan know the score. We have 75 MPH speed limits in some parts of the state for a reason... We all tend to drive fast up here, even in winter.

Occasionally you'll get someone with Ohio plates riding slow in the left, and lots of times on a two-lane highway you'll end up stuck behind some farmer driving under the speed limit in his combine/tractor/pickup full of stuff, but for the most part Michiganders drive fast.

And I just want to add, on behalf of all of us who grew up in Michigan, some dude from Florida calling Michigan folks "not that bright" is high comedy. There's a reason the cliche is "Florida Man" and not Michigan man.

Having driven in Michigan (it's been a few years) I think it has to do with the condition of the right-hand lane. The right lane was beat up, rough, rutted or otherwise terrible. The left lane was much better. We hadn't been on the road for five minutes when I told my wife "I see now why everyone from here is a left-lane driver."

What part of "legal" don't you understand? If you only commit one burglary, do they wait for the second before it's a crime? Should we give people a pass if they only stab somebody a little bit?

There's a posted speed limit. There are fines for exceeding that speed. Can't abide by the law? Don't drive.

This concept has always confused me. How can there be a passing lane if there isn't enough lanes for all the cars to begin with?
Every day that I commute, both to and from work I see the following;
solo drivers in the HOV lanes
people driving on both left and right shoulders
people dangerously cutting others off to get half a car lane ahead

Does anyone actually expect you to stay out of an open lane while the rest of them are jammed solid?

Where is the HERO tag??

It is about farking time they do this!

When I learned to drive my father said if you are driving in the left lane going 90 MPH and the person behind you wants to go 91, you move over and let them pass.

2018-10-04 05:25:20 PM
I much prefer the "left lane is the fast lane" logic to the "left lane is for passing only".  First of all, bouncing between the two lanes is more dangerous than just driving straight.  Secondly, you have to deal with traffic getting on the freeway in the right lane.  Thirdly, I think it makes sense to attempt to balance out road wear by having both lanes used about as much (if you only use the left lane to pass, the right lane will wear out quicker).

California, as usual, does it correctly, as it is a "left lane is the fast lane" state.

The problem with that kind of thinking is that 'fast' for some people is not fast for others.  If you are in the left lane, you are potentially blocking it for someone else.  Get the hell out when not using it.

/Death is the proper penalty for slow in the fast lane and left lane blocking.

2018-10-04 05:32:59 PM
If this were the true spirit of the law, I'd be behind it. Instead it's just another tool for them to pull people over.

I absolutely think that the police should almost NEVER pull cars over out of safety and just send a bill/summon to the car along with video evidence. Make it a bond you have to pay at your next tag renewal you have to pay and then court for a refund of it.

Having 2 car fulls of 'roid rage idiots with a farking seizure party of dazzle lights on the side of the road stopping traffic for miles for some idiot driving to slow is the WRONG way to solve the problem.

The only time cops should have their lights activated is for a real bonafide public safety action such as an accident or to direct traffic or respond to an emergency call. Period. Moving violations do not count. Only serious traffic infractions such as DUI, H&R or violence are where stops are allowed.

Problem: define "fast". Guys doing 70 in a 65 in left lane think they are "fast" and so won't yield to people driving quicker.

Geotpf: Secondly, you have to deal with traffic getting on the freeway in the right lane.

No. Merging is 100% the problem of the person trying to merge. If you're in the right lane you have nothing to do with it - just keep driving.

Also, keep in mind there are more than just two lanes in a lot of places in America.

This has been a law for now a year or so down here I think.

My friend who is a town officer has written a handful of these when they are egregious, like doing 35 on a road that has a 55mph limit. I'm not "TICKET EVERYONE" guy, but these dopes deserve it.

Just like speeding, going way below the posted limit in the passing lane is dangerous.

2018-10-04 05:43:29 PM
Gosh, as a Florida driver, I thought 317 F.S. specified that the only way to pass is as fast as the vehicle will go and as close as possible to as many other vehicles as possible while changing lanes as often as possible.

Not when there are two dozen cars bumper to bumper trying to get on.

The big cities have those little stoplights to control that but most places don't.

I don't live in a terribly congested area, but we do get our share of "10 below the speed limit for no good farking reason at all" rush hour times.  (and yes, it's entirely due to ineptitude, not congestion).

The problem actually starts in the right hand lane, where you have drivers that belong there, but don't want to be there for some irrelevant reason or the other.  So they sit one lane to the left, either matching speed with someone to the right of them, or being passed on the right.

This shiatbag driving of course then overflows into the passing lane, and you wind up with 3 lanes blocked by clueless farkers who have zero concern for the person behind them.  Gets me annoyed even typing about it.

Where in California is this mythical Paradise. The only time I've ever come across this is on the 5, most of the time, right up until some asshat decides to stick in the left lane at any speed below 80. Then you have 5 miles of pissed off people cause the one ass won't get out of the way.

The left lane is the passing lane, if someone is riding your ass you either drive faster, or get out of the way.

Simple.  If traffic is passing you (on the right), you ain't fast.  Move over.

Given how Floridiots drive here in NC, I'm doubtful that the cops in Florida write tickets for anything, except maybe speed traps for out of state cars.
