there are still rumors circulating that he's cooperating. I doubt it, but if so....hilarious

Does he plead guilty, and then accept a pardon while the media is all focused on Florence?

2018-09-14 08:37:14 AM
I bet he pleads guilty with no cooperative agreement.  He's going to rely on Trump's pardon.   He's got two options, go to jail forever, or be killed by the Russians for flipping.  There's no middle here.

"The memories (nightmares?) of early morning lines to get into the Alexandria courthouse for Manafort's trial are still fresh in my mind "

Nevertheless, she persisted.

You poor dear.

To get any kind of plea deal, he'll have to provide useful, verifiable information regarding someone bigger. I'm fine with him getting pardoned if it helps to put Cadet Bonespurs behind bars.

Yeah, I'd be shocked if his strategy was around anything other than a pardon.  I'm sure Mueller has contingency plans for that happening.

I'd imagine that the State Attorney Generals from at least NY has the warrant ready for a judge to review, and will have State Troopers waiting to make the arrest, unless we believe that Manifort lied on his federal taxes, but paid his state ones...

Then the bank fraud charges from NY, California, etc are still pending, and are now state charges.

I'll bet it is just a normal plea in exchange for a lesser sentence, no cooperation.

Most of the legal types have floated the idea that if he is offered a pardon and accepts it, then he's admitting guilt to his tax dodging at the Federal level. The State of NY then levels their Tax Fraud charges against him, and he'll have no safe corner from that. It'll have to be an uncontested guilty plea. He still goes to jail for a long time.

So the question, really, is this

Will Donald Trump use the hurricane as a distraction in order to pardon Manafort and continue to obstruct justice as discreetly as possible, OR will Donald Trump pardon Manafort because the hurricane has taken over the news cycle and he's SEETHING that they aren't talking about Donald Trump

I'm guessing some unsatisfactory turn of events as this shiatshow rolls slowly forward.

2018-09-14 08:53:06 AM
If he is reasonably certain that he has a decent shot at a pardon, why plead guilty rather than nolo contendere? I mean if the charges he was convicted on in Virginia are essentially a life sentence and you don't intend to offer anything to mitigate your sentence beyond throwing yourself on the court's mercy why concede anything?

It's like the theory that Mike Flynn is innocent but could not afford to pay for his legal defense and was forced to plead guilty and cooperate. Why would he swear in court his agreement to the facts as presented by the prosecution if that is perjury?

If he's pardoned, he loses his Fifth Amendment rights and can be compelled to testify about anything.  That's worse than a plea deal and cooperation for Trump.

Rely on Trump's pardon? That's a risk, Trump hardly knows the guy. Manafort just got him coffee a couple of times.

Why plead guilty for such a nothingburger..?

2018-09-14 09:17:22 AM
It's obvious that this will end with Trump being placed in the Witless Protection Plan.

Half his staff has already set the groundwork for that.

2018-09-14 09:18:15 AM
So yesterday they reported that Manafort's and Trump's legal teams were coordinating their defenses behind the scenes/  We all know that if Trump publicly stated that he would pardon Manafort, it would be obstruction of justice, but what is to stop Trump's attorneys from privately obstructing justice by conveying the message to plead guilty without cooperating and you will be pardoned?

Yes, and then-

Hyperbolic Hyperbole: Will Donald Trump use the hurricane as a distraction in order to pardon Manafort and continue to obstruct justice as discreetly as possible,

somedude210: isn't he use Harvey as cover to pardon Arpiao?

Yes- Now is the time for Trump pardoning Manafort after he pleads guilty. Nothingburger indeed. Although those pesky state charges will remain, which brings us to--

markie_farkie: If he's pardoned, he loses his Fifth Amendment rights and can be compelled to testify about anything. That's worse than a plea deal and cooperation for Trump.

THIS. It's no secret the Special counsel keeps open lines with state prosecutors. Something tells me that Mueller is working an angle that will put Manafort in (state) Prison while forcing him to testify under oath. I genuinely believe the President and Paulie think they are being slick by issuing a pardon in the middle of Hurricane Florence, but from what I've seen so far in this case, Mueller has been about 4 or 5 steps ahead of this administration at every move.

I'll say it now, when it comes down to it, Manafort will not go to jail. I think he Dwyers himself. The way he's acting, it's as if he feels he can beat the system, it hasn't truly dawned on this idiot that he's trapped in a sinking submarine taking on lots of water.

Well, this is the first time I've ever had news come in as I was writing a post that completely bowls over what I just wrote. That said, this is Fox, I will wait for another news source to report this, but if Manafort is cooperating with the Special Counsel, I think there will be more wetness in Donald Trump's pants right now than in the entire Outer Banks.

So if he pleas without cooperation and simply pleads guilty to get a lesser sentence, he's still looking at, what, at least 10 years in prison between the existing 8 counts and whatever he pleads to in DC? That's a life sentence. Plus, they can retry the other 10 hung counts from the Virginia case.

He's got to cooperate, no?

I honestly don't think this is up to Trump.  Putin makes the call on that.  I'm serious.  Noticed how many countries are currently meeting and working with Russia.  They know who is in charge.
